"Too much politics in the fire dept's anymore. The state is getting so many training requirements and qualifications in place, that a lot of the farmers and ranchers around here just don't have the time to keep up so they have quit."
BINGO! That's the exact reason I left our rural fire dept. Things were getting way to political and nobody was doing what we needed to do, namely fight fires.....
We have a hard time finding volinteers also. Most of the farms and ranches around here have their own fire fighting equipment and join together to fight fires. It's nothing formal, so all the crazy state rules just don't apply.
Glad to see it is not just a local problem - and that is pretty sad. My cards expired about 3 1/2 years ago (including the EMT and BLS instructor certs) and I'm pretty sure they are going to stay that way.
We used to have a bunch of "G.I." rigs around here with big fan nozzles mounted on the front, side and rear. They could turn those on and just about drive through a grass or grain field fire. Now they have "brush rigs" with 3/4 or 1" hoses that looks like they are watering someone's front lawn. I suppose those are O.K. if you are putting out a bark mulch fire in downtown Portland.
The fire yesterday afternoon/night, the FD incident commander would not authorize a wild water feed. The farmer set up his own. I don't know why they wouldn't. They used to hate doing that because it could make a mess out of the screens and pumps, but, it seems a little cleaning beats driving 5 miles to refill tankers from multiple agencies and draining a small rural water districts reservoirs. They could have freed up tankers from at least 10 agencies last night by just doing what the farmer did. Put the wild water feed into the creek.
1 ton brush rigs are the main reason 4 others and myself left the fire dept 8 years ago. Totaly useless in a wheat fire. The farmers still use the old equipment and the fire dept just wastes time and man power. What a complete waste of time and money. Brought to you by people in Salem that have NO clue!
Now that I'm totally pi$$ed off, time to get some work done. Have a great day guys!
Evening guys. Long day today, but got a bunch of work done. Mikey is coming up tomorrow and we'll finish painting his chassis and engine, then Monday he can put the engine back in the chassis. Next week we'll start on the cab.......
Just popping in for a minute then out to the farm for chores and some irrigation.
Still trying to get the skunk far enough out in the garage out there to get a clean shot at him. Next problem, is if he starves to death, we'll still have the same stinky problem. Have had the garage door shut for several days now. Open it up hoping he will come out, but he doesn't. He sticks his head out from behind the black smith forge, but won't go any farther. Will open it up this evening and then hide where I can see the door and see if he comes out. Should be hungry and thirsty enough to get out of there. I saw him through the window a couple of times, but he hasn't come out when I tried this earlier...................maybe he "feels" watched by Ruger.
Well, I got a big surprise this evening. There is more than one skunk living in the old garage at the farm. Got one, got it out of there and disposed of. Came back to close the garage door and was greeted by a bushy tail back by the blacksmith shop equipment. It didn't squirt but it certainly caused me to back out of there in one heck of a hurry. This is getting real interesting in a real hurry.

Good morning Oregon, hope the weekend is going well! Jim, how do you get those things out?
Finally got the bottom of the 67 cab primered yesterday, time to flip her over, and get on the cowl, dash, and cab corners. Be nice to get this thing done by fall, and get started on the box before winter.
Mikey should be here in a half an hour or so, and we will paint his 65 chassis so he can reinstall the engine/trans. I also have 11 interior doors to spray paint for the house remodel. I'll also be pulling some parts from the lathe out of the hot tank, and putting more parts in. Not much going on here............lol
Ah, just another quiet day of retirement, huh? LOL!! Good news here, we started refueling yesterday, so HOPEFULLY we're only a few weeks from a restart. Be nice to be making power again!
