Jim, the fishing was S L O W. I only fished one day at Wickiup and didn't catch anything. It was my first time there and didn't really give it much effort. I was using the correct gear from the reports that I was able to glean from successfull fishers but I didn't use any weight and therefore didn't get my gear in the face of the fish.
My FIL fished early and late every day and got skunked. Serves him right for being an a$$ho!e and drinking too much while camping.
The fish that I saw caught were nice Kokanee in the 16"-18" range. I'd like to go back and try again... under more favorable conditions (without the in-laws).
We set crawfish traps at Crane Prairie and the only thing that we caught was a leach that my daughter picked up while swimming in the lake... Needless to day that was the end of the swimming.

Ahhh gee, High Cascade leaches never hurt anybody. You just peel 'em off and keep on going. If the fishing is slow, you can use them to add protein to the evening stew!
They are one heck of PITA to clean off the bottom of the boat once they have dried on after the trip home. I have some bottom paint on my boat now and that solved that problem.
If you can't catch fish at Crane and Wickiup, you need to seek the advise of a master.
And I ain't talkin!
Late July/Aug are challenging for fishing on these 2 lakes, Wickiup should be getting low, and Crane pretty warm and algae ridden, wait until Sept. to hit em' again.
This is the time of year to hit the high Cascades Backcountry lakes, mosquitoes guard the good fishing!

Dave, thanks for the advice. I keep telling my wife that July and August aren't the best months to fish these lakes. But she doesn't want to fish early because its too cold.
So go for Sept. We'll be headed for Diamond Lake the 3rd of Sept. We could have a fishing party. Although the fish never bite, nights are a little nippy and sometimes there is a bad mosquito hatch. Did I mention the Lions, Timber Tigers and Bears? They also have them camp robbers up there.

The fish don't taste near as good from warm water this time of year, Sept/Oct are a great time to hit these lakes again (water levels permitting) when the water has cooled.
otherwise stick to the really deep lakes like Odell and Crescent, Paulina and East lakes for better fishing.
Don't miss out on the hike in lakes either, BIG brookies are to be had, just be sure to bathe in OFF! before getting out of the rig.
Another reason to do the Sept/Oct thing in the high country...........first freeze.....no mosquitoes.
Late July/Aug/ early Sept. are pretty hard times to catch big trout, but the fall temps bring out the feed again.
My favorite times to fish are opening day-early July.....Then late Sept. to close Oct.31..........diamond Lake can be FANTASTIC in Oct. if the good weather holds through the month.
Diamond Lake is fantastic in Oct. Not to bad going into the first couple of weeks in September, but can be fussy on what part of the Lake you fish. High Country snow is usually cleared out so you can get into Skookum (requires hiking partially down the side of Devils Canyon opposite "the Strips") if you want. Lemolo just a few miles away has German Browns. Crater Lake fishing is less than exciting and it is a rough trail down into Cleatwood Cove.
