Man down...

I was pulling the Boy Scout troop trailer home from summer camp. I had 4 Scouts in my truck. We drove about 30 miles from camp...all systems normal. I'm **** about my truck. All fluids were checked. Tire pressure was checked. I had already run about 150 miles on the tank of fuel (so no recent fill-ups). I run a fuel additive (diesel kleen). I do everything that I can think of to avoid this:

About a 1/3 mile from stop sign in a busy town, the CEL came on and I felt a light stutter under the hood. Not a broken part stutter, more like a boot coming off the turbo or a belt going. I do a gauge check and notice the boost is pegged at 0. It's never stagnant. I get the reduced engine power light as I role into the stop sign intersection. There was a gas station across the street I was going to pull into. As soon as I got to 5mph, the engine quit. No power whatsoever. I tried the key. Three times it started with all sorts of sputtering and the minute I put it in drive, it died. Fourth time, no starter engagement. I disconnected both batteries, waited a couple of minutes, touched positive and negative cables, and rehooked them up. Still nothing. I had to try something waiting for the wrecker. I called Ford's roadside assistance...got hung up on twice after on hold for a good 20 minutes. I was pretty frustrated. Cops called a wrecker on my behalf. Wrecker got us out of harms way and towed us to the gas station across the street. A friend of mine with an '05 HD F-350 PSD came to grab the trailer and the boys. Tow truck towed my truck to a smaller Ford garage about 6 miles away. No one was there. Not even a key slot. I call them tomorrow to see what they find. I'm suspecting something with the turbo or waste gate or something electrical.

I'm pretty disappointed. I haven't been stranded in over 10 years. I had 4 young Scouts in my truck. I love my truck, but that is unacceptable. It's Ford's problem now...

Even if a boot came off, the system shouldn't prevent the starter from working for good but then again, these are smart trucks.
Problem or false alarm, a sensor is involved in this.

Sputtering makes me nervous though; as if it's fuel system related.

Looking forward to read what you find out.

Getting stranded sucks, BTDT. Hope it's nothing major.

I checked the boot...it didn't come off. No WIF light or warning. I always fill up with BP #2 diesel and often from my friends BP station in town. I had for the last few tanks. He is right off the highway and sells a lot of fuel. I'm not certain what it is, but I know it's only been a day (this happened yesterday morning) and I already feel like kicking a can up and down the street.

Well, I'm thinking hardware (say LPFP) related (simply not sending the correct amount of fuel).

I too, would be very curious as to the diagnosis of your problem. These 6.7L trucks have been very good overall, compared to the 6.0L/6.4L trucks they replaced.

Hang in there bro, hopefully in a day or two you'll be back on the road...and this will just be a bad memory.

BTW
I'm impressed, you took the time to chock the trailer wheels.

I'd vote for a sensor failure except for the stuttering. Sounds more like HPFP/LPFP considering that part.

Hopefully it's just an emissions fault and the truck shut down. The stuttering could have been the PCM messing up due to an emissions fault and since the truck was moving it couldn't just stop the engine??? Too bad you couldn't have got the DTCs before they took the truck. That would tell us for sure what the problem is.

You know if this is emissions related I'm going to have to give you a hard time about it, Right?

Good luck either way getting your truck fixed and let us know what Ford says.

Oh, I'll let you know. I just want the say thank you to the AWESOME help that we received from the city of Cecil's police department as well as the guy driving the flat bed. I know they recognized the trailer (BSA of America) and went the extra mile, but part of me say they were the type of people that it didn't matter. They were really good and helpful in a stressful time.

Wow, very sad to see this. There will be many folks looking here, I hope the "toldya so" crowd keeps it down for a while.

Unfortunately, trucks don't treat their owners based on how the owners treat them. We often humanize these things because they give us such great experiences, in the end, it just goes on and off.

Subscribing, wonder if the EGR could do something like this on the 6.7?
