There's something I've wondered about. If you recall the plunger for the FPR stuck on me one time. When I got it out there was a burr on the side of it. Looked like aluminum. I sanded it off and put it back in. Could this plunger be sticking open sometimes?
After thinking about this for a few days , ...The pump only puts out what it is capable of . The reading you get from the FPR is on the return .. If you restrict the return the pressure will read higher (artificially ) , but does not necessarily have anything to do with how the truck runs .. The truck will run on 10 lbs of fuel pressure . If you have over-sized injectors that can use the extra fuel , shimming may help . Other than that I see no benefit ..If the FPR is stuck in the open position , the pump (if good) will still function as it should . Our injectors are pumps too, & are capable of "pulling " fuel if need be ..
What I've never figured out is how the furl treatment is making a difference. There's just too much evidence to say it's not doing something. In fact, today I had only gone 2.8 miles while back on straight diesel when it cutout. Is it lubing something? Allowing the fuel to get through a clog? The vapors effecting a sensor? How does it tie in? Can't figure it.
I printed the list fordpride gave me. I'll take it to Ford tomorrow and see what I can do. I had guessed a new FPR housing would be high, but I didn't know you would have to get the whole works. That would be costly. Haven't hit the lottery yet.
Only smelled it when it got on me. Mainly when cleaning tank. Didn't smell gas. This has been going on 3-4 months, surely I haven't been getting bad fuel the whole time. Maybe not impossible, but seems unlikely. These are high traffic stations. In fact a guy I work with buys his fuel for his new Dodge at the BP across town with no problems.
Naw, too good of a truck for that. This cutting out problem is the only real problem. Those pedal bushings were just normal wear and tear. The truck has very little wrong with. This is the only biggie. Sure is being a stumper.
It sure sounds to me like there is an issue of some kind with the FPR on your truck.
I'm going to go with that and see what happens. On this list fordpride sent I see it list 2 repair kits. Would the AA kit have the CA spring in it and I wouldn't need to get the spring too?
If I am reading that list correctly, both kits include the spring, but the AA is for a Cali emissions truck. The Cali trucks ran more fuel pressure so I believe the spring is different. I think you want the A kit ((Ford) F5TZ-9K061-A (federal emissions; 94-98)).
Well, don't know if I'm dealing with a bunch of drug addicts at Ford or what. Basically what I'm being told is I can't get any of the parts for the FPR, got to buy the whole housing. $420 without fuel bowl. Can't even get the shrader valve.
