I have 2 face to face interviews next week. I do have a feeling I will likely land one of them.

Well, hopefully one of those will work out, Roger!

Are either what you are looking for? Are they mechanical engineering positions

Both are ME jobs. One is working with hydraulic cylinders and pumps, the other is turbo control systems

Turbos would be good if you had a diesel. Which do you prefer?

I would be in charge of developing the control systems as well as egr systems for OEM diesels, so my old 6,9 wouldn't really benefit much from it...

That sounds pretty cool. Could become a info resource here for the guys with the newer diesels though. Wichita job would you prefer?

I feel more comfortable with the hydraulics job actually. It is also direct hire, while the turbo controls is a contract, with potential for hire.

The direct hire sounds more secure. They close to home?

That's the tougher part, both are an hour commute. One can be mitigated by relocation of a sort, as my wife has a good job that she doesn't want to leave at the university. The contract would mean I commute only, no reasonable relocation options. The benefit that offers though is that I get some engineering experience that would possibly allow me to get a good job more local. Part of why I would like to not relocate is that I have my parent's farm here. I help out as I can, if I move, that is no longer as easy an option. It would likely be a year before I would relocate anyway. I would hate to take the hydraulics job and leave them, as they are a small company and are looking for a long term-permanent replacement. Same can be said for the turbo controls as well, but they are not as willing to deal with my lack of engineering experience, hence the temp option.

Wow those are tough options. Hour commute would get old in the winter. Lack of experience makes it tough to get started

Rick, The comment was to those who pop in and as Roger stated, never bother to see what conversation they are interrupting or see if any one is around to converse with. It is my understanding that you are not one of the guilty ones. If you drop in to say "Good Morning" you might stick around to see if any one is home. LOL.

Even suggesting moving 30 min closer would hardly yield enough benefit to adjust. Tough call Roger. I do hope you are able to land something soon. I can't relate as I did the military thing instead of college. Let us know how it goes.

One benefit of the hydraulics location is that I have family there, so in the event I needed to get ahead of a storm, or can't safely get home, I can go there.

As far as moving closer, the benefit would come from the reduction in distance, as right now, I have a half hour minimum commute to most locations, as my wife does as well. If I can keep the commute for both of us to the half, we would about be the same as we are here right now to the local areas. Downside is the fact of having to re-invest somewhere different, when I am sitting on 240 acres now, with an existing setup. However, we were planning on spending at least as much on building here as it would take to buy somewhere, so if we are to move, now is kind of the time to make a decision like that.

I kind of think if I was in that situation I might try the job for a year to be sure it was worth an investment in a move. But you definitely have some discussing to do when offered either job
