Yeah, it is. Probably good for mileage, but just not quite enough grunt for my taste. I'm sure it would be bogged down, with 3 kids in the truck with us!
It's all in the application. My mom just needed something that got good mileage and not so hard to get in and out of. She ran an 02 Buick Lesabre to nearly 400,000 miles, but my father and her were starting to have more troubles getting in and out. My dad still whines some, but I feel it is easier on me with how my back is getting in and out of the Edge over the Buick.
I would imagine the Explorer is still rear drive too, not that there should be that much loss to that format... I would venture it is the added weight of the rear setup that makes the most difference. Might be a bit larger cabin as well.

I would love to get an Edge Sport. Ford did good on those. One of the guys I work with has a Flex. I like the utilitarian look, but classy feel. Either of those would be great. I just need to convince the wife that she doesn't want a minivan (Odyssey) any more. Yeah, good luck with that one.
I want to say hers is the SEL, but I know it is about a package under the Sport. It has the 20" tires and chrome rims. It doesn't have the touch screen, which I am not a big fan of.
