That was one old jet trainer.... he had turned Final and was 2 miles out on short final... no comments by the FAA or the navy as to what happened... apparently the plane and pilot were on a contract to the navy for air combat practice.. but not a lot more yet... it was one year ago today at the same airport and runway involved that a Boeing 707 tanker crashed on takeoff...

Yupp, thats what the news paper said.
The contractor is on Mugu base. They do tactical training; they are the "bad guy" in flight training ops. This is the 2nd crash they have had in 3 months.
Like you said, he was on final approach. 1 person was on board (who died), and had a wing man who landed safely. The plan apparently caught fire in mid air.
