we had our first go tonight at putting the engine in. It kicked our asses.
Ended up pulling the trans completely out, and having the pull the engine back out when we found the clearance issues.
The Bad:
It wouldn't fit.
The Good:
I can make it fit!
I need to pull out the reduction starter and put my nippon denso starter on. Its about 1.25" shorter which will make removal possible without an engine hoist in the future. Everything clears other than that driver side manifold. I ended up modding/building new motor mounts which locate the engine 2" further forward. RacinNdrummin hammered the firewall, and I guess it fit with the tape measure, but when it came down to it, dropping the engine in, we were about 1/4-1/2" away!! What a bummer.
So, tomorrow I'm going to swing the sledge at that little corner on the firewall and see what kind of clearance I can get out of it. If I have to, I will perform surgery on it.
The Goal for tomorrow is to at minimum have the engine bolted in. Depending how well the firewall work goes, I could also have the trans and driveline done.
Needs to be bolted down at the motor mounts to pull it straight, but that is for tomorrow... I'm just happy its all sitting in its mounts, trans is bolted on, and everything clears!!
Russ (typ4) is coming over to my house tomorrow to hang out a bit, and bring me a return line kit as well as injector port reamer. Also, ARP studs will be here tomorrow for the intake.
