If you're on a phone, you might not see it. But every thread now has a link button at the top and bottom of the page for all those services that I mentioned, and each of them must call their home server to download the icon and status. You can watch all the linkups made in the status bar on your browser. It all takes time, and the page cannot be browsed until they have all either downloaded, or timed out.

Just more crap to slow down the download.

Oh I see what youre talking about. Did that really slow down your browsing for you? Yeah its more to load, but I have some website building background and those small buttons should not cause too much slow down.. Yes they do have to ping ("call home") first, but when you look at the grand scheme of things, its a very small difference. For example, this page is 5957 lines of HTML code. Each of the buttons consists of 2 lines of code. Thats a grand total of 16 lines per page load out of 6000. Whats more, is there is not a lot of communication between each of the Facebook/Google/Twitter etc servers to load those buttons. All that is loaded is the image of the button and if enables a "like count." Often the image of the button is stored in your computers cache, so even thought it needs to load, your computer says "HEY! I've already got that image. Here you go." There is far less communication than the "link back" system that has been in place for a long time.

It all depends on the response of that remote server. Today the Stumbleupon server seems very slow. I just waited about 10 seconds for that one to complete. The amount of data is not the issue. It is the response time.

I have to use IE here at the office. I'm also getting an "Error on Page" on every refresh. I will see how it compares with Chrome and FF when I get home.

I'm not arguing with you, I agree. If one of those buttons fails, it could bog down the page. But here are some numbers to put things in to perspective.

That is just a snap shot of the 100s of items loaded ever time you load a page, but its very easy to tell by looking at my list here, that the buttons have a VERY small role when it comes to the delay loading a page. I have not included ever item for each of the new buttons, but I included ones that give a good representation of each of the other elements involved for that button. Each button has between 3-5 elements to load.

Also, its worth noting that many of these things happen all at once. The internet is not a 2-lane road with one lane in each direction. In this case, I had over 50 simultaneous connections.

Out of all of the new buttons that are loaded, Stumble was indeed the slowest, at a combined total of about 500ms.
Out of everything loaded, StumbleUpon was the 26th slowest item out of 150. 1-25 were all parts of FTE such as the supporter icon, smiley faces and avatars.

Everyone's results will vary, and they will change everytime you load the page, but that is just an example and take from it what you want

Now days the little yellow triangle in IE doesnt mean much. IE is a few steps behind the rest of the world when it comes to how the internet is constructed, so often there are small elements that IE doesnt understand.

Seems much snappier tonight. I still think it is a ridiculous setup to link all those services.

HBO has been playing this entire series every weeknight. I'm catching up on a few episodes tonight.

I think its stupid too. I dont need to "+1" or "like" a thread because its interesting... I might "+1" or "like" FTE in general, but I'm not going to do it for individual threads.

It's on HBO Zone HD east and west. If you have FIOS it is channel 910 @ 8PM and channel 911 @ 11PM. Or 410 and 411 in standard def.

I don't know if we even get that on Dish. I'll have to look around.
