That's a Ford half-track? I don't think it was for military service, but very rare indeed.

Yup they were, the Germans had several light and medium trucks from a few different manufactures converted to Half Tracks. The Canadian Military had Ford trucks converted to Half tracks prior to WWII also..

The Canadian ones were conversions done by Innes Cunningham, I think I posted these a while back but never hurts to post them again. IIRC they were primarily used as artillery tractors but found other uses as well.

And not to be out done the Aussies had their own Ford truck half track, It utilized the complete track system from a Universal Carrier (Bren Gun Carrier).
The Universal Carriers used Ford running gear Engines,Transmissions and Axles
