They do both open. I don't know which is which but the two station wagons that Steve built these from had different tailgates. The front half of the trailer has "normal" station wagon tailgates. That is the top half with the glass hinges at the top and opens upward and the bottom half folds down. The rear half of the trailer has a one-piece tailgate hinged at the top sort of like a modern SUV. I think that Steve told me one time that one of these was a sedan delivery and the other was a 2-dr wagon. Please don't quote me on that. A sedan delivery would have had metal in the side instead of glass. Perhaps one was a 2-dr and one was a 4-dr wagon. When he built this trailer those wagons were a dime a dozen and no one wanted them.
I would guess the short wheelbase is for ease of build. This way he didn't have to change the wheel openings. He just cut both back ends of and welded the two together. I say just....but there was a ton more work than that.
The trailer is very cool, but the short wheelbase does give it an odd look.
Even the upholstery matches the car. I think it was built just for the novelty of it and I don't think he's ever actually used it to haul anything. He has told me, though, that he and two buddies waited out a rainstorm in it at a car show once.

I believe the axles are pick up front axles.
ANYWAY; sorry for sidetracking this interesting thread. Let's see some more oddball stuff.

I understand that at the time of build it was da bomb but lowering everything 6" would make it look allot less awkward . That being said it's still very cool and nicely done .
The double axles on the trailer only look odd because of the short length of the trailer. Most all trailers with multiple axles have them close together. I would agree it was necessary to make the wheel openings work, so for that reason I think it looks fine. It's probably more stable to tow and easier to park than a single axle.
I don't remember for sure but I don't think so. I've been around it for years but haven't actually looked inside of it for a long long time. I think the floor is flat with the same carpet as in the car. Side panels and headliner match also. When Steve told me about the rain I wondered why they didn't just sit in the car where there are seats.
I agree about lowering the whole shootin' match but my name isn't on the title.
