Actually considering a smaller one - was going to use a cross country move to justify the expense. Was wondering how expensive camp sites with hook up's tend to run, or what the rules were for stopping for a few hours at rest areas along the way. (Comparing the cost of a lighter weight TT against a cargo trailer and hotel rooms.) Saw a couple locally that were just light enough to pull with a 1/2 ton.
I think it'd be neat to have the TT when we get there though. Can't imagine it'd have enough room to want to live in while we house hunt though.
Edit: Maybe I could just explain to the wife that... "It's for the dog...."

Campgrounds with hookups can run from $25 up to $50 typically, or a lot more if they are connected with tourist attractions or high property value areas. I use Woodalls site for info.
I only use campgrounds at my destination, not for overnighting. Seems like a waste to pull into a campground and hook up just to get 8 hours of sleep. Unless you are on the road for several days and need to replenish and dump.
I've never had any problem finding a place to overnight. CA reststops are fine with overnighting. I think they are supposed to be an 8 hour limit, but if you don't stay multiple days it probably isn't strictly enforced. Many Walmarts will let you park over night, as will Cabelas, Bass Pro, Cracker Barrels, etc. Just make sure it looks like you are parking, and not camping. Don't unhitch, don't put out the slide, no fire rings, etc.
Having said that, the extra cost of towing fuel will often offset the cost of motel rooms, so it is not always the least expensive way to travel. Rarely is in my experience.
If you build a fire ring in a parking lot, you might be a redneck.
I've heard stories from the Wally parking lot, let me tell ya.

If you have a propane campfire, you might be a Yankee.
Speaking of reststops, that is exactly what we did last weekend. We only had 3 days, so we left Thurs night and made it to a reststop 15 miles south of Big Pine by around 11 PM. Slept there until dawn, and then finished the drive to the campground. This saved me one night camping fee of $20, but more importantly I wasn't backing the trailer in pitch black darkness nor waking up the whole campground with our antics.
I shot this while the truck was warming up to leave.
That's the rest stop where Northbound Ca395 rises just to the South, right? And Southbound traffic crosses the median to get to it? I've seen the aftermath of a couple of bad traffic accidents there.
