Gas prices
#331
We're in the middle of a family vacation out in California.
We've seen some pretty varied gas prices let me tell you.
In the SoCal area it was in the $3.79 range as was it in the San Fran area. Although some individual stations are higher and some lower...that is about the average there.
When we got to Yosemite it was $4.79 per gallon of 87 octane...we thought that was bad until yesterday when we were traveling thru Death Valley and came upon this!!!
Thankfully I planned ahead at both of those places and had plenty of fuel in the car and didn't have to pay those gouging prices!
Then we crossed just into Nevada (we're in Vegas now) and we were pleasantly surprised by
And a few miles later we actually saw $3.21 per gallon for 87!...I guess Nevada has lower taxes or something?...don't know.
Figured I'd share some topic related photos of the fuel prices we've seen on this trip.
Per gasbuddy.com it looks like fuel in Fort Wayne is running right around $3.79 per gallon for 87 octane...
Joe.

Joe that looks like the Shell station at Panamint Valley on 190. It's famous for it's high prices. I remember passing though in July 2008 and it was $6 something a gallon. Hopefully you filled up in Olancha for $2 less a gal. What did you stop to see in DV? Was it under 110 degrees? Yes NV has lower taxes and apparently hand write their gas signs or the sun baked off the letters. Was that in Beatty?

I believe the place with $3.29 fuel was Pahrump NV.
Yes the place in Death Valley was on 190...not sure of the town though...it was right as you came out of the elevation area (climb down coming from west to east)...the prices sure surprised me...that's why I stopped and took the photo...
I filled up in Lone Pine CA just before we entered the park...so I was good.
As far as what we saw...well we only saw a few things...
And it only got to 110 degrees!
One of the neatest things in this park is the fact that it actually has much of the park BELOW sea level!!! Let me tell you...driving with the GPS showing elevation...much of your travels will show a (-) in front of the elevation number...kind of different for sure!
Here is a photo of us at the great salt flat area...that particular place is 282 feet BELOW sea level and it was 110 degrees when we were there...
The interesting part of the salt flats is how the shapes on the surface of the salt looks...check this out...also it was extremely WINDY there too!...I guess it would be what you would think of being inside of a hot BLAST FURNACE!!!
We're in Vegas now...I know everyone "raves" about this place...I've never had a desire to come here...and now that I'm here...my opinion remains...I can now at least say I was here...and never come back again...one interesting thing...if I go down the pool area...I have to pay $8 per aluminum 16oz "bottle" of beer...or I could buy a "bucket" of 5 for $35...or I could walk out on the strip and get 2 cans of beer for $2 or 2 aluminum 16oz "bottles" for $4...You would think after all the hotels I stay at I'd get used to the gouging of alcohol prices...but I don't...the difference between alcohol prices and gasoline prices is we have CHOICES with alcohol prices...I don't have to pay the high prices at the pool and I can choose to spend my money elsewhere for the SAME stuff...with gasoline though...the scumbag oil companies have a monopoly...how come the government broke up Ma-bell but isn't doing anything about Pa-oil???
Oh well... back to vacation mode...We're headed to Henderson tomorrow for 2 days and we'll see Lake Mead and Hoover Dam before heading back to SoCal where the girls will visit Disney Land on Tuesday and Wednesday...

Well it has been a while since we complained about fuel prices...
The price of 87 octane in Fort Wayne ranges from $3.17 to $3.24 today...has been steadily dropping.
Here's the country map fuel "heat" pricing index...
They claim it will continue to drop until next spring...hmmm...how is that not manipulating the consumer???

I filled up about 3 weeks ago at $3.57/gal 87 octane...
I track all of my fill ups.
This year we did not take a long RV trip like we normally do with the Ex and travel trailer...so the Ex pretty much is my chariot back and forth to the airport and she sits at the airport or at home mostly.
When I was writing down the mileage and gallons...I realized that I have only put gas in my Ex FOUR TIMES this year...total gallons was around 120 for the year and total miles was around 1200...man it was a slow year for miles on the Ex...but with the fuel prices...I guess that is a good thing when I struggle to get 10mpg (unloaded) with the ethanol additives they are using and the 4.30's in the axles...
So all in all...the fuel companies convinced me to cut back on usage on the vehicle I have that gets the worst fuel mileage...we drove the mini van and the mini cooper much more this year than years past...
I believe I will be taking my long RV trip up to North Dakota, Montana and then down to Wyoming and South Dakota next summer...that will likely be the last big RV trip we take and then the Ex and TT will be put up for sale...my 12 and 14 year old daughters have already been in 37 states and after next years trip we'll add 3 more for them...
