I went out to see what he got into and
almost met the skunk myself.
I chased it out of the yard and
saw where it came under the fence,
that will be fixed in the morning.
When I came back into the garage the smell hit me.
but it wasn't strong like when its hit by a car
or sprays the neighborhood.
I did have to open the garage and
kick on the exhaust fan.

I was a small child, too young to even go to school. Dad had walked out the door to go to work, but came back a couple of minutes later without ever getting in the car. It turned out he'd seen a skunk go under the car as he exited the house, just as the neighbor was also exiting his. Well dad wanted no part of that skunk, but the neighbor said that he knew how to handle it and would be glad to. Dad quickly agreed and came back inside.
Just a minute or two later, there was the unmistakable sound of a .22 rifle shot. The clown had shot the skunk, under the car, and yeah, it had exactly the impact one would expect.
But the hilarity didn't end there. This would have been about 1957. Most cars didn't have trailer hitches back then, but that one did. It was scheduled to pull a float in a local parade that very night, and a replacement couldn't be found!
The bathing suit clad young women somehow managed to smile that night as they rode on that float....
