glad your fix was easy enough. The worng cam came in for my truck and now it sits unitll at least Wednesday. all kinds of dealership excuses, long story short I will have been with out my truck for at least a week and a half. The truck doesnt have the extended warranty, is ford going to cover the rental?
Across Canada we have quite a fleet of trucks. Maybe i should check with our fleet manager to see what can be done.

Help me out....if I had another 6.2L to compare to I would. Engine running, hood up, is it 'normal' engine noise to hear noticable ticking? All this talk of arcing wires and other maladies has me hyper-sensitive to these noises. I might go to the dealership and lisyen under the hood of a truck there.

Or I could save you the time!! Mine ticks. Has since almost day one. I went to a buddies house who's dad had also just bought one. Same EXACT truck for the sake of discussion. His did not tick at all. Quit as a church mouse. Didn't sound anything like mine at all.

I brought mine to the dealer the next day, and they said mine was normal. I suggested that maybe we could pull up one on the lot and compare. He said there is no need because mine is normal.

Welcome to Ford. This is how the last 4 dealers I have been too has behaved. Everything is "normal". The big surprise comes when the vehicle is out of warrantee though. That's when things are no longer normal.

I posted a video somewhere here on FTE of my ticking. I went and bought a cheap harbor freight mechanics stethoscope and pin-pointed it to the injectors. Mine did not increase in speed as the rpm's climbed... Dealer said it was normal.

By the way for anyone who wants to try the TSB that involves replacing the canister purge valve, I have a brand new canister purge valve that I bought. It cost me $57. I bought one because my dealer wouldn't perform the TSB, and for $57 it was worth a shot.

In my case, replacing the valve did nothing at all. My noise is RPM related, and I believe it has nothing to do with the CPV.

I would be happy to ship it to anyone (United States only) for $40. Save yourself about $20 and a trip to the dealer. Why not. It takes 5 minutes to try it.

Dropped my truck at the dealership this morning to get the engine checked out. I described it as stuttering and running rough during acceleration. Also told them about the ticking sound with the hood open. Let's see what they have to say when I pick it up. Its been 8 hours as of this report and I haven't heard back from them.

It's been days since your last post. What did the dealer find and tell you?

I dropped my truck at the dealer at 7:30 this morning. Left it there to deal with ticking and hard shifts. When I pulled into the service area, I was lucky enough for the truck to be ticking like crazy. The Service Advisor (SA) went to turn off the engine and I stopped him and told him to listen to the tick. I explained that sound was why I was there.

At 3:00 I called to see if the truck would be ready by 4:00 for pick up. The SA said that there'd be no problem as they were unable to replicate the shift issue and that their head technician said that the engine sound was normal. I asked the SA if the head tech had heard the same sounds as he had this morning. He didn't know; he wasn't around when the tech was working on it. BUT..the tech had said that the sound was perfectly normal. I asked the SA if HE thought is was a normal sound, he said that if the tech said it was normal, it was normal. I told him that it was a good thing the truck was under warranty and that when the engine blew apart I could honestly say I had done everything I could to prevent it.

The SA told me that when I picked up the truck I could try and get him and the tech together to explain that it was normal.

Fast forward to 4:00 ... I am not happy; I make my living with my truck and I'm pretty certain that these idiots had just wasted a day of my wages to slap "unable to replicate" or "normal" on the service order.

I grabbed the SA and told him to get the tech and bring him to my truck. I started the truck up... no ticking.

I looked at the tech and asked him if this was what he heard when he "tested" earlier. It was. I looked at the SA and asked him if this was the sound I had complained about. It wasn't. As the two of them are hemming and hawing about engine noises and how they have to replicate them... the engine starts its tick sound.

I looked at the SA and asked if if this was the sound I complained about.. it was. I looked at the tech... he admitted that the sound was not normal. In fact he opened the hood, hopped up the tow hook, the bumper and onto the top of the rad to start trying to isolate the sound.

Eventually he found something (which he admits, he doesn't know what part it is or what it does) that if he unplugs, the ticking stops. He promises that they'll phone on Monday to schedule replacing the part...

On the transmission side, the tech told me that he'd instructed their transmission guy to reflash the tranny. I showed him that the papers didn't show that being done. The SA went to see if he could find the transmission guy to see if it had been flashed. I told that tech that the latest TSB showed that some solenoids had to be replaced as well in the earlier 6.2s, of which mine is one. He'll look into that as well.

All in all, I doubt I'll be too inclined to take my truck back to this particular dealership for service; at least I got the pleasure of seeing the SA and the tech standing there looking stupid as hell. They had all the information to do the right thing and just seemed to rubber stamp things through the system.

Edit to add: While the SA was trying to find out if anything had been done on the transmission; the tech told me that he'd had another SD in 3 times for complaints of ticking and wrote it off as normal sounds all 3 times. He said he'd have to call the guy and have him bring it in to check if it was the same thing as mine. I advised him to find out what part on mine was the problem and what the real fix was before he called this guy back and wasted his time.

As crappy as that was, at least you got the two of them together to compare the noises they were (or weren't) hearing. Not to mention the truck started ticking right then and there. It's hard to find even a decent service advisor, let alone tech. The one I've been dealing with about my moonroof glass and a liquid dripping off the back of my brake pedal has been less than stellar. Definitely keep us posted of the outcome, I'm interested to hear what he unplugged (loud injector?).

Follow-up to my ticking noise posted above. 'There's no problem, that's normal' said the Customer Service employee, as reported to him by a mechanic.

Found this in a old thread about the ticking sound.
The TSB is 10-25-07 and is for rocker arm ticking.
Not sure if this is what is wrong but might not hurt to talk to the dealer about it. Any info you can give them to help trouble shoot can only help.

I took my truck in today for several issues, one of which being a persisting ticking sound. Like a rocker arm tick. Well, I took the service coordinator for a spin and he heard it. He took the technician for a spin and he heard it as well. Allegedly the technician 'test drove' two similar 6.2L trucks to hear the same exact noise, brand new off the lot. Therefore it was deemed a normal operating condition. They did NOT inspect for TSB 10-25-7 because my truck does not have any misfire codes stored or pending. My truck left with about mile over what I pulled it in with.

In April I had the truck serviced for the same thing, TSB 11-1-5 was performed for the purge canister's intermittent noise. This was happening again and this issue was not addressed by the dealership this time around.

This all started a little while after taking it off the lot, maybe at about 1000 miles. It got worse around 3500, and worse now. It's very easy to hear now where before it was faint.

What should I do from here? Take it as it is, go to another dealer (there's three more within 30 minutes of here), or keep going back until I reach Lemon Law?

Not sure where you were looking to go, but I went to one that's about 30 minutes from you, and they told me the same exact thing. It's normal. If you want to know that dealership, PM me and I will tell you. Save you the trip anyways....

Sounds like they did some extensive testing on your truck to deem it it normal. 1 whole mile will tell you a lot you know.
