The stupidest (is that a word?) mod I've ever seen, was back in the mid eighties. I live in NW Florida, and back then, there were a lot of sand trails that we all drove around on before this place got built up. This guy with a Chevy Vega kept getting stuck, because his car was so low to the ground. He put a jack under his car, and measured the shocks when they were extended. He then cut steel pipes that fit over his shocks, and bolted his shocks back on. The shocks couldn't compress because of the pipes over them. The fool then installed some huge (for a Vega) mudders to gain ground clearance. He was happy about his cheap lift kit, until he broke off a shock mount. That must have been the roughest riding Vega ever. Makes you wonder how far the family tree branched off, if you get my drift.
Guys....we agree that we don't like ricers..but there is no point in sitting here and having a huge discussion about it and getting all fired up. This thread will be closed if tempers flare...
There have already been many "i hate ricer" threads...I hate them just as much as you but..can't we get over it?
cary when you mentioned the Mustang with sidepipes I had to check to see if you're from the same town as me.
One of the local druggies has a black Mustang GT with sidepipes on it, jacked way up in the back, really big hood scoop, snow tires, and a trailer hitch on it.
He also has a Chev 4x4 with a major lift kit in it, diamond plate all over it and stock tires.
It seems like a waste but he also has a Super Duty Lariat dually with a billet grill, nice fiberglass hood with small scoop and a bit of chrome on it. It sure looks out of place for him to drive a nice truck too.
Toyota 4 runner with a lift kit and 13 inch (Yes, THIRTEEN, Tiny miniscule) low profile, hot wheels, tires. Looked like a cat balancing on a beach ball.
Hmm some guy around here has a new Cavalier with two race seats, harnesses and is getting a roll cage........takes him 5 mins to get his harness on and this may not be a mod but sure is dumb, had a friend get drunk one day and paint his Escort camo with a rattle can and then put a HUGE orange X on the hood. , this being the same guy that put a glasspack on that escort also.
Going back to the first post, I think I saw that same magazine with the worst mods.....
One that comes to mind is using bricks for axle spacers--and the cool thing is, it will work to either lower the rig if your springs are underslung or to raise it up if your springs sit on top. Available everywhere.
I remember the 2x4 trick to jack up your car so the new wider tires would "fit".
Great till you hit a bump and it falls out.
Eldo into flat bed.....here's the next logical step, again seen in a mag, I can't recall which one but it was a Mustang mag, I now recall:
1969 or 70 Mustang Fastback, Cobra Jet 428 equipped. Back of the body is cut out and a cab-over camper slid into it.
If you guys want to hear about some stupid mods, go to www.**************.com What a horrible forum site. Everyone there is obsessed with chips and superchargers, and how they can't wait to install their $70 tornado intake accessory that "creates a swirling effect in the air that increases gas mileage and gives an additional 25hp" please. I won't even get into the "awesome" cosmetic modifications. Those people are very ignorant when it comes to vehicle performance. Not only that, its run by a high price magazine with hardly any useful information, just a crapload of "awesome mod pics" as usual. Pick up a copy, you'll see what i mean. OK, i'll stop ranting, but as for the worst mod ever, most any automotive accessory at Wal-Mart qualifies.
"Lets run a 50hp shot of nitrous and a computer chip at the same time! Together, that must be about 200 extra horsepower!"--> <--"You moron."
Well, nevermind about the link, but you guys know the kind of people im talking about.
not all lowered trucks look stupid. a friend is in the process of building a 75 F150 short box stepside street rod, and it is lowered 3 inches. but then it is also done properly. the rear was narrowed, the tubs were made by grafting fenders to the inside of the bed, it runs 15 inch wide rear rims with big meats in the rear, 12 inch front rims, and a 460 with a c/6 trans. this truck is a sister to the 70 that was done almost the same way, except that one is a fleetside, and has a 428 cj with a 4 speed top loader.the 75 is an orangey red, the 70 is john deere yellow, they also both run ford dog dish hub caps
Last summer there was an early '70s Caddy convertible running around town with the huge wing off a sprint car mounted on the trunk. I was hoping to see it again after I got my digicam so I could get a pic, but he must have parked it out of embarrassment.
Worst mod I have done? Hmm, there were a few in my younger days...when I was 11 I had an old Studebaker pickup, the gas tank was shot so I strapped a bright orange 15 gallon drum to the right side to use as a gas tank. I thought it looked sorta cool...
I had a neighbor about that same time with a bright red '64 Ford pickup, with every tacky old man accessory you could think of. I don't how much money he sent to JC Whitney, but he had chrome air horns and clearance lights on the roof, a chrome Brahma bull hood ornament, more clearance lights everywhere, chrome exhaust stacks (and it wasn't a stepside, so they stuck way out the sides) and even a chrome water faucet mounted on the dash. Lets' see...chrome running boards, chrome-tipped mud flaps on the back, chrome splash guards on the front, and even a chrome spotlight. I recall him lamenting that his wrap-around Barden bumper was too big to fit in the chrome shop's plating tank, so he just had silver paint on it...for the time being. He was always asked to drive this tacky monstrosity in parades. I wish I had a picture of the thing. -TD
