F100 lowering question

I picked up a 1979 Ford F100 Custom. The truck is very clean inside and out and the 302 runs great. On the top of my to do list is to lower the truck by at least four inches in the front and five in the rear. Having no experience with ford vehicles, I set out on a journey of searching the internet for parts and ideas, however, never did I think it would be such a difficult task to find parts for this vehicle.

After some research it seems like the DJM 3 inch lowering I beams, with a 1 inch drop coil will be my best choice up front, but I am having a difficult time figuring out the best way to get the rear end as low as I would like. I know DJM makes a shackle/hangar kit which would put me at about four inches of drop, but I am look for a little more. I have read about the axle flip kits, but can not find a company that makes a kit to purchase. In the long run I will most likely air bag the truck or look for a kit to do a way with the twin I beams and maybe a four link out back, but for now I am looking for something to get it lower without heavly modifying anything.

If anyone can provide with me some information on where I can look for parts the help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!! <!-- / message --><!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig --><!-- END TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig -->

For the rear springs, you can do a front hangar flip (similar to the DJM bracket) but it utilizes the OEM hangar and two of the factory rivet holes. You would get 5 inches with a full flip. Delete the "thick" leaf in the spring pack will net more, plus some extended shackles to lower it another 1-2".

DJM and AIM make axle flip kits and the "C" notch kits.

Thanks guys! J, the kit you posted in the other forum does that come with everything that will be needed for the flip? I was looking at that kit the other day but wasnt sure. Also, do either of you know of a company that makes the coils for the front? Like I said before I dont have much experience with these trucks so I have tons of questions. Ill try to post some pictures of the truck.

These are pictures of how the truck looked when I got it two weeks ago. Only thing that has changed is, I removed all of the trim, badges, rear bumper and replaced the passenger side fender.

b_duncan,

I used DJM's kit, though I didn't use the flip. I found it to be all inclusive, excellent quality and their technical support excellent. If you have specific questions about their product, I would suggest you call their tech support line.

Thanks, I think that is the way I am going to go.

I don't know for certain but since the same shackles and hanger kit fit from 75-96 F150 fit 73-83 F100's, I don't see why the flip kit wouldn't work on F100s and F150. But I could be wrong. Maybe you could email DJM to find out?
This kit from chassis tech has it listed for 65-81 F100 and F150.
axle relocaters

Sorry I can't be more help. I'm guessing it comes down to the size of the axle tube.

I tried calling DJM today, but the numbers on their website were not working today. I emailed them instead, just waiting to hear back from them now. I was looking at that kit by AIM earlier today and if I dont hear back from DJM, Ill most likely go with that one. Was even considering the AIM kit that drops it six inches and includes the C notch, however, I am not sure if I want to go that route. Not sure what else is involved once you lower it six inches.

I am still looking for a set of 1 or 2 inch coils for the front and a good set of shocks for it after I am done with the drop..Any suggest you guys may have would be great. Thanks again for the info!

Still no lucky finding a 2 inch drop coil..I am also having a hard time finding a tie rod relocator for it also. I have heard that AIM and DJM both make them, but I cannot find a dealer that sells them..Any suggestions?

If you go with new ibeams they'll come with the tie rod relocators. I don't think you would need them if you go with cutting coils or find some lowering coils. Because the purpose of the tie rod relocator is to make up the space that the new i beam raises the spindle away from the tie rod end. If you get shorter coils, the relationship between where the spindle attaches to the tie rod doesn't change.
