Thanks for posting these pixs Ed.
While it was kind of sad to pull apart my 53 M350 at least your`s will be on the road soon. It wasn`t likely that I`d ever get around to working on this 53 any time soon, not until after both the 53 & 56 M100`s are done.
might have to grab the front cross member from that 53 and bolt it in as the motor mount is under the crank pulley on later flats and the water pumps on the early ones
Just have to swap the water pumps to the earlier style for the front mounts.
That would be easiest for me, as I have the two off already from my 46. Someone else said they may need to be shimmed up as the newer engine sits lower - anyone else heard that?
Also, what about the color - trying to figure what it would have been....
Ooops! Just found the info...
"As for original paint colors, the Ford and Mercury engines through 1940 were a dark green. Ford cars continued the color until 1942. Mercury engine had a dark blue color from 1941 thru 1948. Postwar Ford engines were dark blue thru 1948. Ford truck engines were generally the same as Ford cars during the years of this group. "
I picked up the bellhousings from Chris' place today, but not sure they will work. What were they from Chris? I spoke to Keith and he said I need a 49-52 bellhouse top plate that is about 3-4inches wide. He has them for $60, so I'll just get one of those. As well, he said the old and new water pumps don't swap (for motor mounts), but just to make right-angle brackets from the 53 pumps to the mounts on my truck. That'll be easy enough!
As well, I finally contacted Bob (also through Morris!) and he has a couple older style engines I'll look at this weekend. Hopefully one looks good enough to use for my 46 rebuild!
Did some more clean-up on the "Morris-supplied" 53 mill today. All the aluminim and cast came up real nice. I'll swap my 9inch external filter onto it, paint the block and heads blue, the headers cast-colored and she'll be ready for show!
The 59A flathead water pumps may not interchange with the 8BA flatheads but the 48-52 trucks used the same engine mounts as the 46-47 trucks. You would just need the 48-52 truck water pumps. An interesting tidbit is the first 20 000 trucks built in 1948 where equipped with the 59A flathead.
I got 2 from a guy out by Morris'. One may be OK. I was going to buy one from Keith (Jitney) but he went rhough 2 and no luck. If the one I have doesn't pan out, I was going to ask him to keep looking....
