You jeep freaks out there.
A YJ would fit 31s from the factory.
I used to own one.
It had 2" lift and 32s.
Fun ride, but a constant pain as it always needed work.
Still I miss it some days.

Dang. I was hoping to get a report real soon on how your engine performs since I will be building almost the exact same engine. I'm especially curious about the performance upgrade the oversize valves and P&P are going to give. Hopefully the same get up and go and pull the stock 390 had. Or maybe even a little better. I seriously can't wait to know LOL. Have a nice trip with the girlfriend.

It got up to speed about the same, but I could feel that even though the horsepower was starting to become comparable, the 300 dominated in torque. It caught me by surprise.

That's all I wanted to hear

Well, my friend did find out that the 300 was built by Clifford's and runs on alcohol. He will try to find out some spec's at the next mud bog.

But you have a '91, don't you, with EFI? Are changing the valves possible with EFI?

We should be dropping it in this weekend, and possibly driving it early in next week. I too am very curious regarding the head work and the engine in general. I'm sure it will have all the power I need, and with the 4v carb, should be quite a performer. I'm hoping the larger size valves give me quite a bit more power.

Now I am shopping for an electric fan. I like the idea of full cooling in stop and go LA traffic, as opposed to the belt driven fan turning as slow as the engine.

If you are doing away with the EFI, I'm curious about which carb you decided to go with.

Yeah, the bronco is an EFI 4.9L but I don't do anything with it except replace what goes out on it. It's my daily driver and I just keep it on the road and nothing more. The 1985 F-250 in my signature is the one I've been tinkering on. The 1979 F-250 in my sig is still in Utah, where I moved from, and I'll be getting it as soon as I can.

When I bought the 1985 the engine was still original with the feedback carburetor setup. I took off the carb, intake, exhaust, and dizzy and put on a clifford intake, EFI manifolds, Holley 670 truck avenger, and DUI dizzy. Then I drove it that way from that storage unit to another storage unit. (Yeah, I've been doing this 'makeshift' garage crap for awhile now). At the new storage unit I took the holley off and put on an Impco propane system that the 300 runs on now. It has two tanks that I mounted on the flatbed and between the two tanks it has 70 gal propane carrying capacity. As soon as I close on a house (with at least a two car garage ) I will be going back to Utah and towing the 1979 back here to Iowa. Then I wll tear into it and start restoring it.

If you remember the auction on eBay from several months ago that had the 300 head with oversize valves and roller rockers, and headers, and clifford valve cover and a few other 300 parts. You posted about it here at FTE. I ended up buying all those parts and they are what I will rebuild the 300 in the 1985 with. Then the 400 V8 will come out of the 1979 and the 300 will go in. The box on the 1979 will be taken off too and the aluminum flatbed from the 1985 will go on. I just bought a little while ago the flywheel, bellhousing, and clutch that I will need to put the 300 in the old 1979.

So yeah, other than that the 300 I intend to build will run on propane instead of gasoline, it will actually be very close in spec to your 300. So I'm really interested in your thoughts on it after you do a little driving around.

I like your idea of switching out the motor driven fan to an electric. Probably a really good idea for your hot climate. Although for the 250-300 bucks those electrics are I would decide if it's really neccessary.

elect fan cost

Cool, yeah, I remember all those parts on ebay. You got a SUPER deal. I was hating you!! ha ha. Take that v. cover and strip it with paint remover, and get a shop to polish it for about $70. They look really good like that.

About the fan: I got some good advice from the guys here. I'll probably be pulling one from the bone yard, at hopeful a fraction of the price.

Spacing will be the only reason for me to go that route. With my radiator for the 390, it might be a bit tight there in front.

Good luck with your projects there. I'll keep you posted about running mine.

Thanks . I saw that several people told you to use the fan from a tauras. Never heard of that before but it sounds like it ought to work great. I hope your install goes easy. Getting the throttle linkage to work right when switching over to the Holley on my 1985 was tougher than replacing the whole exhaust system LOL. It's nice you've got a mechanic friend to help you out though.

engine swap

Thanks. I think that if I go that route with the elec. fan, I'll use the Lincoln Mark V111
fan. I imagine the other guys were thinking I was going to be using the stock 300 radiator. But even with junk yard prices I don't know if it would be worth it. It would cost about $50 for the parts, then I'd have to replace the motor to feel confident about it. I imagine with the new motor I'm probably looking at $150 total already. ...well, I'll toss it around.
