Project: Smogie...RacinNdrummins IDI build
So anyway, I have been keeping this thread going over on PSN (And OBN before that),and I have been working on this for the last 6 months or so.
Ive been a ranger guy for a while, I love the trucks, had several of them over the years, and Ive owned a couple B2's as well. I also race motocross (The Racin in RacinNdrummin) and I have getten tired of bumming a place to sleep while im out at the track (Two days races, etc). This brought on the decision to buy a travel trailer so I could have my own place to sleep and hang out while im at the track, also I wanted to go camping in comfort when Im not out at the track. This posed a little bit of a problem, rangers dont like to tow 25+ ft travel trailers.
A couple years ago I had bought an 89 F250 for $500 that had a 351w with a "bad" transmission... Well first thing I did was peek underneath and I saw it was a C6 trans... Sold. 5 minutes and a pair of scissors later, I was driving a truck that shifted fine... Broken Vacuum line to the modulator... So after several months of driving that thing around (Just for the hell of it, it was in good shape) I got really sick of getting 10mpg... Best I ever got was 11mpg Hwy... So needless to say that wasnt going to work. After a couple of months of sitting, I sold the truck to my dad, and then it sat at his house (His F4TE 351 swapped F150 would out tow this F250)...
Fast forward to earlier this year...
After I decided to buy a truck to tow a trailer, I wanted something that I could burn WVO and WMO in without causing too many problems (Free fuel bro!), and I bleed ford blue, so that narrowed me down to one option... The IDI.
I started looking around at IDI trucks (knowing nothing about them) and the first truck that interested me was a 94 Turbo F250 SC 4x4 that was pretty "clapped out" at a dealership. 200K and missing half the dash, but still an IDI and the last year of them... I figured I could buy it and fix it up. Problem was that the dealership wanted 6k for it and My budget was right around the $4500 mark. I told them how clapped out the truck was, and that Id buy it for $3500 out the door, no questions asked... And while im sure they would have taken that in a heartbeat (They had the truck inspected, and failed horribly) the owner didnt want to sell because of some sort of "5 star" dealership BS... he wanted to put money into it and sell it in a decent shape for 6K.........= Boned.
So After all That, I decided I still wanted an IDIT, and after a couple of leads, I came up empty handed. Until one day while browsing CL, I came across a guy parting a 94IDIT/ZF5 with 160k on the clock, went and test drove the truck, and decided that was the powerplant I wanted. So I dropped $1750 for the Engine/Trans and all the rest of the swap stuff I needed. I then proceded to buy the old F250 back off my Dad, and he ended up just giving it to me after I told him the plan...So here goes..
I decided to swap the IDIT/ZF5 into the F250 and have a truck that would do everything I wanted, was paid for, and old enough to not have to worry about much. The plan was to run it stock (It already had a rebuilt IP and injectors). Toss it in and go... Well about that time 1badb2(NMB2) had moved up my way and after sharing several interests, we became friends. I got to drive his "Imfamous" Flatbed and after that I couldnt bring myself to put my engine in my truck stock.
I had an HY35 turbo on my shelf from a previous project, and I thought, "why not", so I made it fit the stock ATS setup...
After some research, I decided that the HY was going to be a bit small for my needs, and while looking for an HX35 to replace it with, I came across a CL ad for a "Turbo" for $100... Turbo was brand new and Turned out to be a Borg-Warner S362/74/14 off of a CAT C7... Needless to say, I bought the Turbo ($1800 turbo for $100, Id say so, and he had 2, 1badb2 bought the other)
I was going to run the turbo on the stock ATS setup when I came to my senses and decided that I needed to do a custom setup. I figured, if I was going to do a custom setup, then I needed to stud it (Any IDI running any boost, should be studded, bar none). So apart came the engine...
Cleaned everything up and installed comp 910 springs in the heads:
Installed the heads, ARP studs torqued to 150ft/lbs (Yes, you read that right) on Felpro head gaskets...
After discussing cam options for the 7.3 with the guys at delta, we came up with an option slightly bigger than the "TYP4" cam meant more for a higher boost turbocharged application... This cam is referred to as the J2 "powershaft"... Both 1badb2 and I are the first to run this cam, and it is probably the best cam for a boosted IDI you can get, it is very efficient...
Got the engine all assembled, and painted...
Hydroboost and MANpedal installed:
I also did what everybody said couldnt be done... I installed 92+ quarter windows in a 91- truck... The hole is a bit smaller, but can be made to work....
Then I had 3/8" flanges waterjetted...
1badb2's old DPS Turbo cal pump from his flatbed
Then I decided I was going to cut up my intake manifold and "improve" it... Took out the pinch points, cut it in half, made positive connections, etc....
Bought a parts truck for the diesel title and VIN, as well as the cab (had some features I wanted) and Diesel specific stuff... Ended up breaking even after collecting the parts I wanted and selling the rest off...
Proceded to tear the parts truck apart...
Took the Brown truck down to the frame and cleaned it up, swapped over the frame harness and tank units...
Installed engine and Trans...
Cab, bed, frontend...
Junkyard interior, With a LMC truck/ACC vinyl floor that never did fit, and is the biggest heap of crap, replaced with a factory carpet, that is soon to be repaced with a factory vinyl floor, that will probably be replaced with a new carpet...
Started my turbo kit...
Intake studs, and intake installed...
IP and misc...
Interior installed...
mani's...
Kit installed...
Almost done...
And the first fire up...

I have about 6K total into the whole project, $4500 cash to start and the last $1500 Ive put in out of my own pocket and by selling stuff. Still beats spending 21k on a ranger you cant do anything with (Ask me how I know)
Im working on getting some specs of the cam, I dont have them right in front of me, but it is basically a more exhaust biased version of the Typ4 cam, and that is why it has such good spool characteristics. I did nothing to the valvetrain, except for installing comp 910 springs... Stock Pushrods, Lifters, Rockers... Only thing different was the springs. The valve lash was right at its limit though, I only have a quarter turn of lash on all my lifters...
Anyway, thanks for the compliments...
