sorry to hijack but what about this guys.... my truck stock when i get about 45-50mph and it finally shifts out it drops from 2k down to about 1200 or so.. just like its falling off a cliff. no easing into it and i gotta lug it to get it up to 60mph. what yal think... normal?
That's because the torque converter lockup is happening late in 3rd gear, immediately before the shift into O/D. Certain PCM codes do that. Tuning can change that. For example, Jody programmed my transmission to have the 3rd gear T/C lockup happen about halfway through the gear. When driving my truck from a dead stop to about 55 mph, it feels like an actual 5-speed because of the spacing between shifts and lockup. That eliminated the huge RPM drop happening at one time, and instead I now have a much smoother power band during acceleration.
Remember that most transmission control boxes like the ATS or the Banks Trans command only do one or two functions, such as change the timing of the torque converter lockup, or electronically bump up the line pressure. None of them actually change shift patterns, downshift patterns, etc.
Same goes for the Edge. All it does is firm up the shifts electronically. It doesn't change anything else with the transmission.
Transmission tuning through a chip gives the tuner more control. However, it is still somewhat limited by the functions of the PCM. Still, the amount of transmission control via tuning is far greater than separate "boxes" you can buy. The PCS controller is the only thing that gives you even more control of the transmission than you can get through tuning.
