In this picture it appears you have sheetrock already on the left hand side? when you plumb down to the side of the stairs, you need to make sure the wall is straight down..You may need to add a spacer to the side of the stairs to make sure it stays plumb...Does that make sense?
Yeah, the stairs look really steep. The standard equation is 7'' rise, 11'' tread. Generally speaking. The vertical part of each step is what I am wondering about. Here, if more than 7 3/4", the stairs need removed....Hope its different there man.
Ours is 7 3/4 rise, and 8 1/2 tread. I may bring them back to the place yet, and build my own stairs.
And yeah the home came with the gyprock and the stair hole was enclosed, and we had to take that out ourselves. And yes, I THINK I know what you mean now. Should be no problem to get the wall straight there.
The stairs structurally are very very solid so far. The guy that built them said they are build so they dont NEED any additional support on the sides, but of course the more the better.
I just wish they werent quite as steep, and wish the tread was a little longer. When we finish them we add about an inch or so, but thats still pretty small for these size 13 extra wide feet lol.
Thats cool Mark. I got a Nikon D3000 for my birthday. Have not had an opportunity to really use it though. Not top of the line but it will do everything I need.

Okay cool! Sounds like your in good shape then bud. When you build the wall attaching it to the floor joists above, even that will help with the stair strength.
The stair isnt all that bad Sheldon, but what is the finish flooring material going to be?
The stairs now dont have any "nosing" or overhang on them, so if carpet you could add some nosing now, and get some extra width on your tread...lots of options right now...not later!
EDIT- Excellent explanation Jason. Forgive me, but are you a builder? You obviously have experience...
Brent, I used to be the Job Sup for a custom home builder. We encountered all kinds of conundrums when building a custom home every time. Now I am a contractor, but I mainly specialize in commercial playgrounds and park shelters (kind you see a parks and schools). I still do a little remodeling too.

It's all coming back to me now...Havent seen you in here in such a long time I kinda forgot. Sorry brother!

That is a weird size tread, to add the noising you can tear off the treads (they are probably glued so be careful not to break off the part of the stringer where the rise and run meet) and put on a wider board or you can add to the end with lots of glue and screws (not the preferred way)
Looks like they builder was keeping the run short so the stairs would end at the wall and not stick out.
Yes Jason I dont wanna forget to thank you for your help too man, what you replied was pretty much exactly what I was thinking, just didnt really know the specifics to it Thanks too Brent its appreciated very VERY much!
The stairs are gonna have some sort of nosing that we dont have yet, then we were thinking about using our leftover solid hardwood natural maple that we installed upstairs....
Good idea/bad idea...?
Whats your fellas thoughts on a painted cement floor with big squares etched to make it look like tiles?
Think the paint is urethane paint, and its for floors.
On edit: yeah Jason thats what I figure too, it was actually an independant guy that built the stairs in his shop, then we installed them. The rest of the basement is wide open though, so he could have went out another foot and I could have extended that little wall where the tele posts are to match it. Oh well.
Hardwood on the stairs is nice, but slick. Thats my only problem with it. It looks amazing, but kinda dangerous in socks...
etched concrete, at least around here right now, is becoming very popular and appearing in more and more high end homes. I'm all for it!
And your welcome, even though Jason did all the hard work, all I had to do was agree with him! lol
As soon as i got the living room done up here, I thought the exact same thing that it was gonna be slick down the stairs. Not sure what else would work though, we have black tile in the kitchen/dining room and both bathrooms, then the hardwood throughout the rest, then downstairs was just gonna be painted concrete. Doesnt give us much options haha
Well kids I think Im outta here for the night. Julie has a board meeting tonight and I get Claire to myself!!! Daddy time...Mommy says Claire needs her veggies, but daddy is thinking french fries are potatoes, so.....lol hahaha!
