If my fuel filter is black, could that be a sign of oil getting by one of the injector o-rings?
By the way when you replace a fuel filter make sure you tighten down the cap properly. I apparently didn't tighten it down enough when I changed mine. I drove about 3 miles with smoke pouring out from my truck and used about a 1/8th of a tank of fuel, before I got a chance to pull over and check it. Atleast I know my fuel pump works great! LOL
black filter could be a few things. was it just dirty, was it oily, or did it have a nasty goo to it? could be just dirt, leaky o-rings, or algae.
just an FYI, my filters have been getting pretty dirty fairly fast ever since the change over to ulsd. i dont know if its just coincidence or if there is a connection. some say we are getting tons of crud pumped into our tanks as a side effect of the ulsd cleaning abilities. supposedly it all the build up in the pipelines and storage tanks is getting pumped into our fuel tanks. i dont know if its true or not but my filters are always dirty.
Swipe your finger between one of the pleats and if your finger comes out with a grease like substance on it you have an algae problem. Other than that it could be oil from injector o-rings or just a plain dirty filter.
mine is algae, its really pisssin me off. i've been fighting the slime for months now and cant get rid of it. i've nuked my tanks multiple times with little change, everytime it seems to get better then the next thing ya know its back in force. i've changed stations and the fuel doesnt stay in the truck for long.

Joe what are you using for a Biocide? I have used biocon from Napa with great success with no changes in stations. I just put one bottle in each full tank then on the next fill up I split a third bottle between them.
