I have seen some pictures of some pretty black filters, however, the case on those was they had not ever been changed, like for 5 years or so. If this is the first time the filter as ever been changed, then yea pretty normal, if you change it ofter like every 6-12 months, then probably not normal, I would buy my fuel from somewhere else.
My last filter change came after only 6000 miles and was completely black. Got 2 tanks of bad diesel within weeks of each other (at 2 different stations), and after the second tank of it my truck continued to run like garbage. Replaced the filter and everything was back to normal.
this is probably a dumb question but how can oil from engine get into the fuel filter when the fuel rails are dead ended .
can any one explain this
The fuel system on the 94.5-97 is differnet then the 99.5 and later ones.
on the 94.5-97's the fuel comes from the pump into the filter, then to the back of the heads, out the front, to the regulator, then back to the filter, this is how your getting oil in your filter.
on the 99.5 and later it is deadheaded in the heads.

Diesel rod
I just pulled mine out after 10,000 miles and it's as black as tar! I changed it when I bought the truck and it was black too. At the time, I didn't think much of it, since I didn't know how long it had been since the last change. But now, I'm concerned. So....is the problem worn out injector O-rings, or something else? Is this typical of the '97's?
Thanks
PS. I have been using Diesel Kleen religiously since I bought the truck. I figure the tanks should be cleaned out and "de-crudded" by now!

Reason: forgot something
i just changed ine last weekend, and it wasnt black, i could tell that it was a different color, it was just a little darker in color than the brand new one i bought, that is normal i am hoping?
I change mine every 5-7k. Ever since the truck was new, it comes out black.
I have tried 3 different fuel stations in my area, all high volume, and it doesn't make a difference.
I run diesel-kleen through about three times a year.
The worn out injector orings are normal they wear out with time. the high pressure oil 3500 psi is blowing by there orings and into the fuel rail. changing orings is about a 4 hour job and about $150
What is the procedure to replace the injector orings. I changed mine filter about 3,000 miles after i got the truck and it looked fine. I just changed it again, 3000 miles later because the fuel filter light kept coming on. It was black and I figured it was sludge in the tank but now i dont know. It is a 97 with 176,000 on it. What ya think?
