Oil filter massive leak

I just ran into a unique situation with my 76' F-100 (360 V-8). About a month ago I changed the oil and put on a Fram "sure-grip" filter. No leaks until this morning. I started it up and 5 quarts of oil blew out onto my driveway and street within seconds via the gasket. When I took the filter off the gasket was raised on one side. In addition, the filter was already loose when I took it off. In the past I've always cranked filters down with a wrench rather than just hand tighten. This time I only hand tighten it. Any ideas on what could cause this after a month of use? or I am just a 90 pound weaking!

Oil filter massive leak

Doop, All oil filters should be as snug as possiable. I usually go hand tight and 1/2 turn with the wrench, and never had a problem. I would contact Allied Signal and let them know about the problem. Fram is too good of a filter to let that happen.

The oil filter should be turned on by hand until the gasket touches the mating surface. Then turn it an additional 1/2 - 3/4 turn to seat the gasket. If you over or under tighten it there is a good chance it will leak. You could have over tightened it and pushed the gasket out between the filter and the mating surface then eventually the oil pressure blew it the rest of the way out. It could have been under-tightened, but usually it will leak as soon as you start the engine this way.

On my diesel, the filter will come loose while you are still looking for leak's if I don't tighten it with a wrench.
Your's might have the same kinda jitters my diesel has. Crank it down tight, and remember to check for the "humanoid" factor after you do anything to your truck.

Are you sure the old gasket came off woth the old filter? I've seen them stick to the block, and a double gasket will leak sooner or later.
