Man Jeremy, dont see things like that often. My theory is the front tire ran over it kicking it up and the back tire caught it on a bad tumble. Crappie luck!
That's probably a 3/8th's lag screw off of a construction job somewhere. Or fell out of the back of some carpenters truck somewhere. I once dumped 25 pounds of 3 inch long deck screws on a highway in Alaska. The entire brand new 80 dollar box. I did not even know about it until 10 miles too late, but I did not drive that road again for the next month.
Dang Jeremy....weird how that made it's way into the tire not being sharp like that! I had an 8 INCH spike one time get into my tire. Weird how you can pick up stuff sometimes.
Lisa.....my baby didn't quite "have back" in highschool....but it was in full effect in 92 during my early twenties lol....well, in 92 I was 20
Now, I have no idea where that came from. What I really don't get though is just how in the heck something that long and that big around (0.40") is able to even pierce a tire in the first place. It's not even sharp! I think it's an old lag bolt of some sort that just has the threaded part broken off since the shank is completely smooth, but also beat up pretty well.
Jeremy I think the most logical answer is that you just managed to hit it just right, the bolt had nowhere else to go except into the tire as the force/weight of the truck pushed against it.
I would gander that the bolt was on the move and at point of impact was sitting head on the ground and at just the right angle towards your truck, so that when you drove up and made contact, it forced the head of the lag into the asphalt and the rest of it into your tire. Your tire was less resistant than the asphalt.
I had a penny in an AT tire one time. It didn't pierce the tread completely but it was pretty odd.

lol. It took you ONE sentence to say what it took me two paragraphs to say. I need to learn to be more succinct.
I think you all are right though, just the right angle, and I'm thinking it had to be at speed, not while slowly rolling through a neighborhood. That bolt is beat up enough that I can see it havign been bounced around on a road for a while.
Mark, I can see why you didn't drive on that road for a while. I would imagine there was more than one flat tire from those screws.
I'm a little puzzled how they work. Do they flatten out with more rpm? Right now it looks like all they would do is pivot the entire plane around and around.
They are in the feathered position in the pic. They do look like a regular prop in flight, but if an engine dies in the air they flatten the pitch out (from the cockpit) to create the least amount of drag as possible. The cool thing about a C-130 is that they can adjust the prop pitch enough to actually reverse direct while taxiing around on the ground.

I'm looking at that, thinking it's the head of a bolt that had been broken off stuck in the tread and has just pierced the carcass of the tire. No big deal, right? So I go to pulling it out of the tire, and it just keeps coming out, until finally, I've got this:
The tire immediately deflated when that thing came out, so I had to take the tire off and somehow fit it into the back seat of the Escort to haul it to the tire shop. That had to be a sight to see. They fixed it no problem though.

I think I got ya beat- one day I pull into the center turn lane and all the sudden something lifts my rear left side off the ground, and I hear a faint hiss. I pull over, and low and behold, there's a freaking WRENCH in my outside rear. I later get it to a tire shop and find out it's a 10mm wrench, but at least it was a Craftsman!!
Jeremy, did I read correctly somewhere that you were a Schaeffers oil rep?
See Lisa, you gave the...oh, how do I say...techinical version(?), with a lot of detailed explanation. Me, I just gave the striaght to the point, crappy luck version.

When I used to work at a tire shop I have seen all sorts of weird things in tires. Screwdriver, keys, lots of nails and screws, wrenches, those tarp strap s hooks, and one time a huge bolt in a semi tire. Never did quite figure how he got that one either,e xcept just the "perfect" angle.
In full effect? lol. I'll consider myself lucky that there are men out there who like a little "back", or I'd be **** outta luck.
Lisa, I like I'm sure most hear who never met you in person don't know how much back or front you got- man that just sounds weird LOL- but any guy would like ya- I mean hell, you're a girl that loves driving a big ol' truck, and that definitely gets the nod over a girl in a riceburner.....

I won't go into FULL detail, but I am a fan of "headlights" & "rear-ends"

Jeremy i see your runing the terra graplers, I am too and Ive had that happen to me twice, both times being a bolt around the same size as yours..Dont know if its something about these tires or not..

my 8 inch spike was with BFG All Terrain tires, I think it's just luck of the draw what you magically pick up off the road lol
