Every time they have been honest about it and say they don't have the funds right now. It's a win-win for both of us, because they simply take the car back home to save up for it, or trade it in on something else.
Sure, I don't get to do THAT job, but I simply turn to the next one in line and go to work.
Sometimes it is the only big job of the day, but I go home at night and sleep well.
That seems like a good approach. Trying to get payment from someone could become a real PITA and/or legal battle.

Good to know my time, skill, equipment, and fuel is worth something to me still lol.

I've lost track of the number of times I've walked away from doing something for a friend that happens to be in my line of work, and they think a beer and a few bucks for fuel money will cover a weeks work. I have one friend in Florida that I walked away feeling so screwed that I've not talked to him in 2 years, and this is a man I've known for almost 40 years. It was not him that shafted me, it was his better half, but he did not have the ***** to stand up to her.

I walked away from a good friend because of his better half, she thought that since we were good friends, I should do every extra for free. He understood, she did not. Of course, he took her side, so I lost that friend. Bunch of crap. I have a hard time hiring my friends, but lets face it most of my friends are my subs, so it's hard not to. When we built my house I had beer and paychecks ready on demand, I wasnt going to ruin any of my hard earned relationships, no way.
