Very difficult with Cedar or treated because the milling is so imperfect. The widths may vary as much as 1/4 of an inch from board to board. So without a table saw, forget it. You'll see some deck builders use a center divider, but to me that is a crummy solution that looks like crap. Now if you can find a customer that will spring for composite, problem solved. But in my career I think I have only done 3 composite decks.

Well mark you must have put alot of time into it but it really looks awesome. When we build our deck i would love to do something similiar to that.

Ive built a few decks just the regular old way, and they turn out nice, but not unique like that, I just think its deadly.

Lisa that video was pretty damn funny! I cant even blame the skeleton a few times haha.

Does the composite last longer though, and have less to maintain? I guess I'm thinking long term investment here. Would composite end up costing less in the long run?

LOL Lisa. I was thinking the same thing. Then there's the one lady (green top I think) who get her friend and moves in for a closer look. Too much!

Yes Jeremy, far longer. Plus it's maintenance free. Use composite decking and vinyl handrails and you're done with your deck as long as you care to live in the same house. I would say over the long run, yes less. You've heard the term "Buy cheap, buy often"?

Thanks Mark. That's kind of what I figured. By the time you figure in cost of maintenance (washing, staining, materials to do that stuff, time involved, etc), and replacement cost down the road, the composite would be better. I've heard that term, but I don't subscribe to that myself. If it's worth me spending money on, it's worth me only spending money on it once.

Ya'll might have seen this but it was new to me today so here you go.

John was a salesman's delight when it came to any kind of unusual gimmick. His wife Marsha had long ago given up trying to get him to change. One day John came home with another one of his unusual purchases. It was a robot that John claimed was actually a lie detector. It was about 5:30 that afternoon when Tommy, their 11 year old son, returned home from school. Tommy was over 2 hours late. 'Where have you been? Why are you over 2 hours late getting home?' asked John. 'Several of us went to the library to work on an extra credit project,' said Tommy. The robot then walked around the table and slapped Tommy, knocking him completely out of his chair. 'Son,' said John, 'this robot is a lie detector, now tell us where you really were after school. 'We went to Bobby's house and watched a movie.' said Tommy. 'What did you watch?' asked Marsha. 'The Ten Commandments.' answered Tommy. The robot went around to Tommy and once again slapped him, knocking him off his chair once more. With his lip quivering, Tommy got up, sat down and said, 'I am sorry I lied. We really watched a tape called Sex Queen. 'I am ashamed of you son,' said John. 'When I was your age, I never lied to my parents. The robot then walked around to John and delivered a whack that nearly knocked him out of his chair. Marsha doubled over in laughter, almost in tears and said, 'Boy, did you ever ask for that one! You can't be too mad with Tommy. After all, he is your son!' With that the robot immediately walked around to Marsha and knocked her out of her chair.
