I have vacuum checked the entire system. Now I only have a water vacuum. The system will hold right at 9 inches with no problem. That should be around 20 pounds if I did the figering right. I can apply vac to the hubs and spin the whell and hear it lock the hub and then watch the axle turn.
I can hear the solenoids click. I am missing a click behind the dash though. I have not heard that one.
Ya know paul, im gonna have to go outside tomorrow morning and see which line I sprayed. For some reason I had it in my head (thought i read it somewhere) that if you have a vacuum leak you could spray wd 40 around to find the leak, and the idle would change slightly when you hit the spot. I did that, but nothing happened, so i shot a shot in a line (which I will tel you which one I did tomorrow) and tried it out, and it worked.
Does your heater (or a/c) default to the winshield defroster when you click your 4x4 switch into 4 hi?
the IWE, not sure what it stands for, seems to give problems if the 4x4 isn't used from time to time to keep parts moving. not sure where the vacuum solenoid is on your PSD...

The more symptoms the better!
I had it in a bad spot last summer. It was a PITA to get out. Could not twist the hubs to lock it down. After I got it out and was moving, the dang thing defaulted to the defroster. I knew I had a problem then. It has not done that since.
And I assume you have done a visual on your lines down there, and they done look all cracked up or anything?
Sherm, you should try and find out what an IWE is, or what it stands for, I have come across that term yet on these trucks and would be interested in reading about it.
Pauls truck doesnt have that though, it has the autolock hub system.
Paul have you read guzzles page about maintaining the system?
Yep, sure have. I have went through about all of the system except for a complete teardown of the hubs. I do not have a location at the moment to do that.
I read something somewhere about a TSB talking about drilling out the shaft. I am going to the dealer and get that. It was something that let more vacuum to the hub.
Guess I am off to the parts store to buy a vacuum pump and gauge.
paul,
you may have a vacuum leak. that will cause the hubs to lock at will.
alot of times the springs in the lockouts get weak over time and i have seen them stay engaged or 1 side will stay engaged and 1 side won't! at the tranny shop i would see that happen on the auto lockout hubs. and the only cure for that is to replace them with manual lockouts. you can get the manual hub lockouts from WARN for about $250. to 350. bucks. and there easy to replace. if the 4x4 system is electronic and you can hear the transfer case motor engage, but no front hub, or the hubs are locked all the time and you have automatic hubs and your not in 4wheel drive the lockouts are the problem! the springs in the lockouts are gettin' weak! and again the only cure is to replace them! or another test to check is to jack up either the left or right front corners see if you can turn the wheels, and look and see if the front driveline turns when you turn the wheel, with the transfer case in 2 wd. the hubs shouldn't be locked.and the driveline shouldn't turn! it should be free!
if you get anything out of this let me know!
It is now time for that $200.00 service job (Oil and Filters). When I take it to the shop, I will do that test. I had to buy one hub (damn that was expensive, but I was not driving 100 miles with an open hub) in an emergency due to a tire blowout tearing off the centercap and hub and a fellow FTE'r send me another that the twist part would work. I have a set of manuals that I have rebuilt if I cannot get this problem fixed. With my back and hip injury, I cannot climb all over that big *** truck trying to find it and the stealership (all of them) is just a parts replacement instead of a diagnose center.
I am going to buy a vac pump to give it a thorough test this weekend. If I don't find it, I am going to block the lines and install the manuals. At least I know then that I can lock it down.
sorry paul,
i was just trying to help. sorry i won't do that again!
Damn Jack, what did I say wrong, I was not ribbing you. I appreciate the advice. I have been lost at trying to figure this out. What you said will be done this weekend when I have the truck serviced. Once again, I do appreciate your comments.
paul,
it just seems like every time i give some sort of advise to someone i get the back end of things, so to speak! i've been a mechanic almost all of my life! it was just an idea, something to consider looking at or how to go about finding the problem! or how to test it! that how i look at it! again i was just trying to help! by the by if your vacuum pump isn't pulling at least 15hg of vacuum your power brakes are going to be harder to stop! hard pedal! of course i could be way off!!!
Jack, you just brought up something I did not think about. I thought the brakes on my SD were hydraulic, not vacuum. The brakes are not as responsive as they used to be. I was placing that due to the worn pads. They need replaced now. Hell, it may be the vacuum pump after all. Thanks for that Idea.
