No topic thread,,, Part 2
As far as small welders go I have a small 220 Millar mig for lighter metal up to 3/16 and a 220 AC/DC for the heavier metal. What do you want to weld Sherm? I`ve always been told that mig is easier to learn with tho I had a few problems at the start since I wasn`t using enough amperage to get good penetration since I worried too much about burning thru. If I was buying an arc I wouldn`t bother with anything less than a 220 one since it`s really hard to weld lighter gauge metal so you might as well have one that you can weld fairly thick metal, my mig and 220 amp arc do all I ever need to. I would stay away from the cheaper Princess Auto brands since I`ve heard it`s very hard if not impossible to replacement parts or even technical support.
I hope you weren`t stranded anywhere in the snow Gerry.
Are you getting spring like weather too Grant?
I got that 56 F100 home yesterday and it`s very a typical of a 56 F100 you find these days, still not too bad but it does have more than enough rust cab corner and front fenders. It still has what looks like original wood in the bed, I`ve seem a lot worse.
Grant, I'll have to see if Inter-Mountain logging is the place I'm going. All I have is two phone numbers. These people go to the cut-overs after the softwood has been taken and clean up the remaining birch.
Does anyone have some experience with small welders? I'm wanting to get a welder for the farm. I've done a little welding before, but not to the extent where I know a ton about it. A lot of people telling me to go with an ARC/stick welder, saying that metals don't have to be as clean as using Mig. I like that it doesn't require gas... Canadian Tire puts a Lincoln Stick welder on sale for $299 quite often, Peavey Mart has a Hobart Stick for $339 regular price, haven't seen it on sale...
Have a great day everyone!!
If your not in a big hurry for a welder keep an eye on the auction flyers. You can pick up a nice welder for a few dollars at a farm auction. I have both a mig and a stick but I use the stick way more.
I was hopping for a bit less rust so I`m not sure what I`m doing with it at present. The frame looks quite usable, it came with both axles, decent doors, it has some cab corner rust and the glass is good except the missing passenger door window and no tailgate. I do have spare tailgates so basically I do have all the body parts for it. A friend has a brand new in the box complete disc brake conversion plus a new and complete Toyota 4X4 conversion to power steering for sale, all for $700. I also have a good 390 just sitting around...
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Got the roof shingled. I'm happy. Throw in some windows today, housewrap, do some wiring, perhaps I will even get the ceiling poly'd and boarded so I can insulate the ceiling. It shouldn't take long to have it an operational space now. I wish I could use an alternative wall covering than drywall. I'm not the worlds most efficient taper and I don't enjoy it either.
Thanks for your input on welders. I will start with a stick. Most of my welding will be putzing around, make a little attachment for the tractor or something, nothing too intricate to start with. I know there were a bunch of times last summer where I was doing something and thought to myself "if I only had a welder"
Colin, I missed some welders at the auction where I bought my two old tractors. I will keep an eye out though, thats a good idea.Have a great day everyone!! Happy Friday.
I managed to get the cab in epoxy yesterday, will apply the seam sealer today then onto high build primer tomorrow. Have a great day guys, my back is killing me but have to get back at it before I talk myself out of it.
Got the front 2 windows in the addition, house-wrapped and a temporary door put in to get access to work in the addition without crawling through a window all the time lol. Tomorrow I'll rough in the wiring.
Loving this weather, though the frosty highways are very slippery.
We have a weasel visiting our yard. Cute little bugger, but I fear if he doesn't leave soon I'll have to have a chat with him about where he should reside...somewhere away from my chickens...
Have a good Friday evening all...
