Here's a different way to look at it -- I paid 21k for my '02 7.3 with 60k on it about a year ago. There's no way I'd pay that for a gasser, V10 or not. BTW, just filled up today -- still paying 3.299/gal. I got about 15.5 MPG, and I drove it pretty hard this tank...
EDIT: From Kelley Blue Book (Retail):
My Truck with a V10: $18,265
My Truck with a 7.3: $23,060
If diesel were more reasonable here, I might have seriously considered a 7.3. But diesel has been 60 cents higher than gas in this area for almost 2 years now. Why? I have no idea. Sure does throw that fuel mileage idea out the window though.
I'm only talking about here... I know most areas aren't like this.

Gas here is ~$2.72/gal, diesel is $3.29. That's about 60c here as well. Not cool... BUT I generally get 500 miles off my 30 gallon tank, so as much as I don't like it, I think I'm still ahead. Heck, my Ranger barely got better than that (around 17-18 mpg) with a 3.0 -- now I drive 10x the truck with the same-ish mileage. That's my justification, anyway.
Diesel was $3.69, gas $2.99 nearest my house for a while. Diesel came down a little though. If the mileage between the diesel and gas trucks were significant I would think a diesel wouldn't be a bad choice, but at those prices and the mileage the 6.4L seems to be getting, I can understand some frustration.
