i ordered the audiophile stereo with sat radio and will likely upgrade the speakers so that makes up for the loss of dz macho.
A couple points; the first one relating to this quote... The V10s do sound a little funny -- here's what my 7.3 sounds like: CLICKY
No question about how it sounds... Like an old school V8 with turbo whistle.
I don't even listen to the radio much anymore...
Now, I'm partial to diesels, but I say get what you want. I'm pissed that we're taking it in the shorts with the whole fuel thing. It just ain't right. But, I average 16-17mpg, and a best of just under 19. The downside is that I really doubt the 6.4 gets that good of mileage (go figure), and there is the whole thing about reliability. The 7.3 wins that category hands down. The 6.0/6.4 is lighter than the 7.3, but I don't know how it compares to the V10. I'm thinking they've got to be pretty close. My "maintenance" costs aren't that much. I spend about $150 on syn oil & filters in a year. Fuel filter = $17 a year, air filter = $38 a year. No big deal...
In the end, I'm afraid I can't help you -- when I went to get a full size truck, there was no doubt that I wanted a diesel, and a 7.3 PSD at that. I say go with your gut and what you think will make you happy. I couldn't be happier with my choice, and in fact, it's better than I expected.
my father in law has a 7.3 and he has not had a problem and so far it has gotten down to -30* in WI lately and he has started it like a gasser every morning, As much as i like the comments about the V10 i have only found one person that i know with a V10 and i test drove it, liked it but i just felt it was WAY under powered compared to the 7.3 and 6.4 BUT it was a 2v and not a 3v V10. I wonder how the 3v run but i have not seen one around here
I was thinking that but i really like the look of the 08, the ability of me buying what I WANT and not what ford or someone else wanted, and i like the interior of the 08. plus i am also having a hard time finding a superduty that is not an XL or supercab XLT that has a manual transfercase, most have ESOF and i want a manual case
Unfortunately low mileage 7.3's are getting harder to come by. The newest 7.3's are almost 5 years old now. I do hope the 6.4 turns out to be a sucess, but until the mileage comes up on them, I will hold off.

I hear ya there! I looked a long time before I found my X last summer. It is 5 years old, but the mileage is decent. As far as the new diesels, Ford isnt the only one with poor mileage. Buddy of mine got a new dodge, his 05 got 16 to 17 he told me the best he has seen on his new one is 13, and that was taking it easy on the highway.
At least the way it is now I dont have the problem trying to justify spending 50k on a pickup to my wife!!!

What is with these new diesels getting crappy mileage?
//Putting on my conspiracy theory hat for a minute// Are the vehicle manufacturers and the oil companies in cahoots trying to kill diesels for some damn reason? Between the this and the ridiculousness of the cost of fuel, it's hard to believe that it's a coincidence.
well my ford dealer is giving me a steal, even though the diesel cost more from ford the V10 has more dealer mark up down here since i guess the diesel prices are so high. A V10 Lariet down here costs around $55K with all the options while a PSD Lariet will cost around $47K with all the options. ...
If they are charging $8k more for a $600 option (V10), or charging $8k less for a $7k option it's a no brainer. Why on earth would someone pay $8k more for the V10? That's nuts, and I don't believe it.
Bear in mind, the V10 will have a higher payload capacity if you're hauling things in the bed.

Nope, it's the idiot tree huggers that caused this. I have been wondering how an engine that uses more fuel than the previous models can polute less. It's all BS.
I looked up the resale for a private party sale on Edmunds for a 2003 (per a poster asking about resale in another thread) and the 6.0L added $1,886 in my area for a truck with 60000 miles and 4 years old. I keep my vehicle longer than 5 years or 60,000 miles, so I priced a 10 year old truck with 120,000 miles and the diesel (7.3 in this case) added $490. I figure after 10 years that $490 premium isn't a very big deal to me and shows the option to hold about 10% of it's value over 10 years. $490 doesn't seem like much.

That is a little odd. When I was shopping for a used pickup last year and my X this year there was more than 7000 difference most of the time. I picked up a 99 f250 4x4 w/ a 5.4 (i know its not the v10) has 175k miles for 4500. The same pickup w/ psd were all going over 11000 still. Excursions are even worse. A nice 02 V10 limited w/ less than 100k miles can be found for 12 to 15000 where a psd same miles etc. is still bringing over 20000. Must just be our market. heck the dealer in billings had 3 05 psd excursions that all sold in a matter of a couple weeks, they were asking 39,900 for them. My nieghbor bought one brand new in 05 for 43,000. 2 to 3 yrs old and within 4000 of new price. you can find similar v10 x's in the mid 20's.
Edit: I just looked at Kelly Blue Book: 02 F350 160k miles(mine)
7.3 PSD: 19,100
6.8 V10: 14,300

That's the exact opposite here in the Wash D.C. area. I'm looking right now for that exact same truck, I have three sticker print outs in front of me. A 6.4 diesel for $51,985 - 2 V-10's $47,225 and $42,800 .
The thing is most of us deciding don't have the 7.3 PSD as an option to us in a new truck. It's an "if" that's not as good as 7.3, or a known, proven V-10, that's it. Heck, the way the automakers work, by the time they work out the kinks on the 6.4 or it's replacement, we will hopefully be ready for another new truck.
