Many cummins probably would hit 500,000k, but the truck around the engine...not so much
Yeah, I think your right. I was just looking at a friends dodge that is a clone of my 97 F150 with only half the miles. The thing looks good but it is shot from one end to the other including the rear bearing and dif. Get terrible gas mileage as well. It is a gasser like my F150. Oh, my F150 still runs like brand new at 110k
The Cummins 5.9 in a medium duty truck is a 300,000km engine (186,000 miles) and it usually need a rebuild. The C-7 Cat is good for 500,000kms (310,000 miles) before it needs work.
The Cummins is a industrial engine and thats about it. Works for running compressors or generators etc.
When people say the 5.9 and 6.7 is a medium duty engine thats a frigging joke
The 8.3 ISC is a medium duty engine the real Cummins engines don't start till the L-10 M-11 ISM. The best Cummins engine made was the N-14 but the 350-400 Big Cam was good the 444 was junk. The ISX isn't that great know a few people that don't like them. The Cat 3406 is the best engine Cat made the 3306 was good too but the 3406B and E model were the best truck engine.
The 5.9 and 6.7 are tinker toys a throwaway engine nothing special.

Yikes! Interesting info. Thanks. Sounds like you must make a living working on these engines?
I work with gravel trucks so I have experience with the 400 Cummins and the 3406 Cat and some with the N-14 Cummins.
I have been around trucking to know that the 5.9 is way out of its legue in a medium duty. The 5.9 Cummins is one step above a gas engine powering a medium duty.

What about in our light trucks? Same level as the PSDs?
Yes i have talked to some guys that have around 500,000k with a cummins in a pickup truck. One guy has a early nineties, and the other guy has a late nineties, and I know them both personally. A few of the other guys I have talked to were just out on leases and whatnot and it was smalltalk.
One thing nice about a cummins too is the rebuild aspect of it. From what I know they are considerably cheaper to rebuild then a powerstroke.
Kenworth, we have an n14 in a kenworth of ours at work, and yeah, that engine is great!
5.9 Cummins a "throw away" engine? I can't buy that even for a moment. The Dodge truck it came in may be a throw away truck, but the engine is a keeper. I've got a 1993 CTD and a 2003 7.3L PSD. I can only hope the PSD stays as trouble free and reliable as the Cummins.

he meant in the medium duty trucks... our trucks are considered "light duty"

From the looks of the postings in the thread I started, how many miles do you have on your sd, it looks like you will be good to go for at least 300k with proper maintenence. Got one with the 7.3 at 900,000. Hard to believe but even harder to believe is the road warrior I met on the intersate with an 03, 6.0 with 900,000. He shares driving with another guy and haules stuff all over the pacific northwest. So so he claimed.
