Here's the running total thus far in ownership. 2008 F450 Auto/ 4:88's/ 4x4, mainly rural roads some cruise control, interstate and rarely over 65 mph.
Just wanted to let you know that i believe if i'm correct my bobcat weighs in at 8400 and the trailer and junk I have with it and usually seed and fertilizer but i've never even seen an 8 since the truck was new much less a 6mpg. Came from Nashville to Atlanta yesterday stopped and fillup just outside of Music City and reset the computer and set the cruise on 79 and came back. Checked when I arrived the computer 13.1 my figures when I filled up in atlanta were 13.0 even. I may not tow the wind resistance that some of you do but the 6.8 hasn't let me down. And where i live is 1600' above sea level and all hills and no straight roads and 90 to 100 temps and 90% humidity to deal with. Hey just my 2 cents.

Like I said before, if that is what you are getting I believe you there are too many factors that can affect mpg for me to not believe you. I can only talk from my experience of having lots of miles on 2 different V-10's, one with 3.73 gears and the other had 4.10's before I switched to 4.56's. I have never seen that kind of mileage towing anything. But also like I said I love the V-10 it is a great motor and has been bullet proof for me.
My 6.0 got terrible mileage for the first 12k then started getting much better. Currently I get about 16-17 with mixed driving and around 19 freeway at about 73mph. Don't worry about the poor mileage until you get it broken in...the mileage will start getting better soon.
My brother-in-law told me they got 23 from their 7.3 also. Why would that engine be so much better in mpg than the 6.0? The tires were stock on their truck.
I just traded an '04 F250 SWB 4x4 crew with a gas V10 and 4.30 rear on a new '08 F350 SD 4x4 LWB crew with 6.4 Liter Diesel and the 3.73 rear. The V10 over all those years was consistent at about 12.6 mpg - rarely varying more than 2 mpg for highway or local.
So far, I have only 200 miles on the new diesel - not even halfway through the free tank from the dealer ;-) ... The on board MPG indicator is showing 13.3 mpg - up from a nominal 10.5 when I drive it off the lot saturday.
It will be interesting to see how this mileage figure changes during breakin - and how it will compare against hand calculated values once I fill up several times and note the mileage.
