Well, now I know I will be driving my 2005 6.0 for the next 10 years.
I consistantly get near 20 miles per gallon from ULSD and LSD fuels while
driving on the highway. I get slightly lower with mixed and about 17 mpg
in the city. If I keep up with the idiots I get about 16 mpg.

Humm, when the biodiesel comes out, guess I will be burning that too.

What is up with the mpg on the 6.4 ? This is unexceptable, shame on FORD.

When you view the mileage numbers I've posted please consider this truck is an F450 with 4:88 gears and it is by no means "run in" or "Broken In". You cannot logically compare an F250-F350 with 3:73's or 4:10's to these numbers and make a blanket statement concerning the mileage of the 6.4

It is what it is......This vehicle is NOT a daily driver nor intended to be, it's life will pretty much revolve around towing my family Rv.

I do, suspect that these numbers will moderate, and perhaps tickle the range of 14 to 15 as time and mileage passes. Beside that, an 11.08 average mpg for a 9000# truck ain't to shabby right outta the box.......let me know what ya get from an equal truck burning gas.

Hey Strut61,

Im with you on that......just wait till these trucks get some miles on them. And anyways i have seen some 15 mpg posts from another thread about the 6.4L and I think it was a 350 SRW so the size does matter.

Any ways I dont drive a 6.4L yet but I am optimistic non the less.

wildcat421, do you or anyone else out there reading this really believe that 20+ mpg is possible in a 3/4 or ton vehicle. I keep hearing all these things about Toyota that makes me think,"are we,American Engineers and Truck builders, really this far behind everyone else?" What kind of mpg are the new Dodges and Chevies getting? Is there any light at the end of the Ford tunnel? I will always drive nothing other thatn Ford trucks but with everything happpening now,I just want to hear one positive thing for the Ford faithful.

When I had my 92' dodge with the ctd I would get 21 mpg on the highway no prob. My dad (a 96' 12 valve) and cousin (2001 24 valve) both are 2wd extended-cab drw, and they both get over 20 mpg on the highway empty. My dad runs 30 lbs of boost and has the pump turned up and can still get 15 mpg or higher when he is towing the same thing that I only get 9.5 mpg towing. But I take comfort in knowing that the fuel savings are not offset by the repair bills on all of the mopar parts around the mighty cummins.

Yea I don't any of them will anymore. I do hope I'm wrong though. As it is now the pay-off for a diesel is around 100k miles right? Well what will it be if these new trucks are only getting 12mpg? The savings are less all the time.

i dunno if there is a pay off with fuel prices higher then gas, but the key benefit is that you can pull about anything as if u are empty

I agree. The 20 mpg days are no longer there with all the EPA crap. I do see a few guys getting 18-19 mpg with their 6.0's but have not heard of anything even close with 6.4 yet. I love my Ford and would not drive anything else either. Anybody that buys these trucks and then complain about 15-16 mpg should be shot. These trucks are built to work not go for Sunday drives.

Let me add this though. The only way these guys are hitting 18-19 mpg's is on the hightway at 55-60 mph. My 06 has 10,000 on her and my excel sheet says I have averaged 13.6 mpg during that 10,000 miles. Not bad considering 40% of that mileage is towing 11,000 lbs. And the rest is 50% highway 50% in town.

These mileage numbers are not very representitive. You cannot figure mileage on ONE or Two tanks. It just won't work. Weather, altitude etc. effect things way too much. There are several posts on RV.com with 450's with campers and unloaded with mileage over a period of time. I have never seen a 450 get better than 12 or 13 emty in any of them over the last few years. Trailer life magazine uses a 06 450 with a pickup box and they get 9 towing a 18.500# 5th wheel trailer and 12.4 empty. That is with a 6.0. They also had an article a few months back useing a Dodge ONE TON with the new 6.7 cummins towing a big 5th wheel that weighed 15,000# and got 9.5 towing and 13.1 empty. These are trucks...they weight 9.000# emtpy. You people are just not informed from the past. I am a fleet manager and I have never seen a diesel of anykind get better than 12 towing and hauling. We had em all. Fords, Chevys and Dodge diesels. If you want 16 to 18 emty...get a 3/4 ton with 3.73 rear. We have still not heard much from the new 6.4 in 3/4 ton configuration with regards to fuel mileage. That only thing I have heard is second hand and from a saleman...ya I know....who sold a 3/4 ton to a guy who has put 4,500 miles on it already and is averageing 15.6 according to the saleman. That is all around milege...and hauling a boat at times. So wiat an see and remember 450's are trucks.

I had a guy in a new dodge come into my business last summer. THIS IS A STORY AND REALLY NOT RELEVENT TO REAL MILEAGE ..BUT ITS JUST THEY WAY SOME PEOPLE ARE. Anyway...this guy was real proud of HIS new Ram on ton dually. I ask him about it and He said they took a trip back to Colorado and averaged 22 mpg pulling thier 25 foot Camp trailer. I questioned HIM a bit more and he told me it got 26 EMPTY...NOW REMEMBER....this is a one ton dually. So ..I looked him right in the eye and said....tell ya what...I would just love to have a big truck like yours. I will give you what you paid for it brand new....right here and now....if it gets that kind of fuel mileage. Matter of fact...I will pay MSRP for it if it gets 26 emtpy....His wife looked a me real sheepish...HE got all pissed off...and I looked at him and said....SORRY to embarrass you ...but I know better......He stormed out....His wife appologized...and I was real nice to her....she smiled and I ask HER....what did you get for mileage.....and just turned red faced and said...oooo....about half that....so folks....I don't believe it till I see it. I have kept milege on over 350 vehilces in my time as fleet manager. I know what they get in the real world. It like they used to say....a big block Ford tuck...gets 10...emtpy or full...that was not too far from the truth. Chevys get about a mile per gallon better on average than fords....Dodges get the worst...period...when it comes to gas....the hemi is a gas guzzlin...hog....if you own one and haul with it...you know. The Cummins gets the best fuel milege of the diesels..but not by much. They always seem to eak out a few tens over the duramax...and the ford are about 1 mpg less. The V-10 Ford tho...are the best fuel mileage when it come to gas in big rigs. They also have the most power..more than the 8.1 chevy and wayy more than the Hemi. The hemi is fine..tilll ya load it...not enough torque. The old V-10 Dodge monster....got the worst fuel mileage of any trucks we ever owned. 6mpg when worked on a good day downhill.

Remember that the 450 w/4.88s is detuned form the factory to 325/600. Between that and low gears I believe your mileage.
Today I have 2600 mi on my 350 156" srw. I have 56 miles on trip meter and I've used nearly 1/2 a tank. I love the 6.4.
It went into regen today so I let it idle for almost 2 hours before it returned to normal, dealer and ford say this is normal. Should've bought a GT500>

I think I might see why your fuel mileage is poor. After 2 hours of idling it might be getting close to being ready to regenerate again. What then, 2 more hours of zero miles per gallon? Why not just drive it normal and forget about the mileage and "micro managing" the regenerations? The fuel mileage will shake out to whatever it will be and when you are ready to trade again, if your not happy with it, well there are other choices.
Of course this is an easy commentary from out here in the cheap seats as I havn't even seen an 08 yet.
