Unknown FE ??

Ok guys here my problem.. I have a 72 f-100 that came with a 360 ( By Vin code ) but ether someone modded the hell out of or replaced with a larger FE..
The stock engine would have had a 2bbl intake.. this one have a 4bbl case iron intake with a edelbrock carb, crane cam Ignitions ( HI-6S Digital Multi-Spark Ignition ) And unknow done to the inside.. The C6 tranny has had a kit put in it.. If I get on it it melts the tire off.. Now I have always heard the 360 was weak.. would thies mods wake it up? Or do I have something bigger?

sounds like you got a little detective work to do , to figure out what you have exactly under the hood , course it dont take much to smoke the tires with a FE

Smoke.. heck.. there 31x10.5r15 on ther rear And Im talking of them breaking free just on a turn, of givin it a little to much gas at a light.. I was towing a 35ft daycruiser yesterday.. with a 300lbs tongue weight and it still smoked them.. What ever in this thing is, It just want to go.. and I mean go fast.. Its insane.. have to drive it like the throttle made of egg shells.. And I love it ...

Well a 360 in stock form is a crappy motor..But with some of the mods that were done on yours..They may have upped the compression in it? One way to find out? Take a piece of dowl rod..take a plug out of a hole..bring it up to TDC (top dead center) Mark it at the plug opening..run the Cylinder down to BDC (bottom dead center) put the rod back in..and mark it again...Measure the distance between the marks, and that'll get you close to the stroke.. More than likely a 390 in there. If it were a 427, it'd be easy to Id. Just look for the crossbolts for the mains and the screw in core plugs. Only sure way to tell otherwise is to measure the bore and stroke.

Cross bolts.. The ones sticking out the side of the block inline with the main caps? If so they are there.. I thought all FE had them..

Not all 427s were cross bolted. But a F-100 pick up is very light in the rearend and it doesn't take much to knock the tires loose, regardless of size. Why would anyone replace a 780 Holley and aluminum intake (thats what came on all the 4 barrel 427s) and replace it with an iron intake and an Edelbrock (really a Carter) carb? I suspect a warmed up 390.

So with the cross bolts sticking out the sides it should be a 427?

And Bear: My F-100 has 3 full tool boxes, Ea. at lest 200lbs. 2 spares for the truck, And 4 spare's for diffrent customer boat trailers ( never know when one will fail when picking up/delivering there boats ) I use this truck for work..So its not light in the *** end.. and its a long bed

Cross-bolting can be done to any block, if you have the money.

Does it look like the block has a "boss" (raised area) around where the cross-bolts go through, or are there spacers/thick washers under the bolt heads and the block was machined flat so the spacers sit square?

The "boss" effect would be a 427 block, I'd think. Again, doesn't really pin down anything.

Measure the stroke. That'll tell you 390/427 or 410/428
