I do believe I mentioned the 406, early on in this thread. But it would have to be a late 406 as the early ones (1962 and early 1963) were not cross bolted.
I have no clue where U got the quote's But I just ran it thru my commercial account on UPS and it $376.98 to ship from my Shop in Redding to a commercial address in 78664
Both of you are screwing up here. FE heads bare, weigh in at about 35 lbs shipping weight(each). But you need to ship them in two separate packages (saves money) I've shipped a few sets this way (big and small block) Always cheaper shipping them separate. Go back and figure them again--35 lbs plus the dimensions (times two.)
You would be soooo screwed if only one appeared on final delivery if they are a matched set. I wouldn't risk that and pay the extra money, should they get lost you get replacemet for the pair. All or none. JMO.
I shipped to 460 D0VE heads from IA to TX a few years ago. I send them UPS in the same box. Total weight was 96lbs and $90 to ship. No overweight fees. I'd think you could send FE heads for around $75

You can easily insure each package for the amount you'd be out for the "matched set".
Insurance is cheap.
Another thing: I have a set of FE heads that I weighed the other day. Each one is almost exactly 50 lbs. Fully loaded with valves and springs.
However, looking through the rate charts for UPS ground, I see no obvious penalty as you go up in weight past 100lbs...

There is a difference though, every time I shipped thru them, it was always a few dollars cheaper in two packages. And very few buyers want to pay more than they have to, to get them shipped. BeemerNut is the exception.

Same deal here i crated and shipped a 390 crank from Ct to Wa for under $100. The crate and crank were just under 100lbs. Not that long ago either.
If you need to date code parts it easy. Head date codes are between the center 2 valves. look for a number/letter/number(s). That's the date code. Same thing on the block. It's located below the oil filter adapter on 64 and later blocks and above it on 63 and eariler blocks. Block casting numbers most of the time don't mean squat. Except some 427 and 406 blocks do use a certain number. Others are mostly generic. Back to the date codes if you see 2 dots under the first number they are 69 or later parts. Lots of the 427 service replacement heads from the 70's uses the 60's casting number and a 70's date code. 70's service blocks for the most part carry no casting number just a date code. The foundry logo ex: DIF, CF, MCC can often timedate some parts also. 428 and 427 blocks were only cast at DIF so if you see a MCC logo it ain't a 427. Baddad pointed out the freeze plugs which could be added as mentioned and the crossbolt mains. Vertical ribs on the sides helps timedate as these were found mostly on 70's blocks both service and production. The sideoiler block has the oil galley cast into the side of the block right above the crossbolts. It's on the left (dr) side and will have 3 allen plugs. Marine blocks won't have these allens just the galley and it might be shaved partially. Also the front of the block will have the front galley bolt or plug to cap the front of the sideoiler oil galley. Both are pretty easy to spot. Not sure if this was mentioned or not. Early 64 and 63.5 427's will have a "HP" cast into the side of the block. The 406's and 390HP also have that. The only C4AE-A won't have it as it doubled as a 427 and 406 service and production block. And also the 390's used the same C4AE-A casting number. 63 and earlier blocks have 2 bolt motor mounts. 64 and later the 4 bolt pattern. Just a few more thing to look for......either way sounds like nice runner. good luck with it.
ok guys.. This is a little off subject here.. But it was funny as hell..
