Ditch the Muffs and Cut out the Kitty. (if your local laws will allow it, or you can outlaw it). I have a split where the cat was running back to the front of the bed where i have 4" chrome stacks. Sounds awesome!!!! Will turn heads for blocks (and maybe a few cops heads depending on where you live)
When I first started my truck up after cutting out my muffler I was actually pretty disapointed, but then I drove it for a while, WOW! ANd then of coarse it just sounds cool saying you have 4in straight pipe.
As far as being bad for the engine, your ok. As long as diesels have turbos on them, there doesnt need to be any back pressure after the turbo. The turbo gives all the back pressure it needs, after the turbo none is needed.
The only problem I have found with straight pipes is your fuel milage goes down and quick!!!!
(from keeping your foot in it all the time to hear the pipes!!)
I agree with wolfe1104 except that you do need some backpressure after the turbo, but minimal back pressure in the tail pipe is optimal. You want your exhaust to flow freely but even the highest flow exhaust systems have a little backpressure to give the exhaust something to push against. That's one of the many reasons you don't see people running straight headers (setting aside the noise and warped valve issues ofcourse.) Topfuel dragsters and track only cars aside ofcourse too.
