Thinking about straight pipes

I am thinking about straight piping my truck. Anyone had good results with this?

if there's nothing else done to the truck, its a waste of time and noise. if you are/have a reputable CAI, and tuner, straight pipe is ok, provided you don't go too big with your pipe, and make sure you integrate a "X" pipe or "H" pipe in there to keep the flow more even between the sides. remember that a tune will need to be written to keep the O2 sensors from throwing codes and CEL's...

lots of guys will spout backpressure and legal issues...

Ok thanks. I have a friend thats pretty high up in the custom tunning world that is getting me a tuner lined up. I just like the sound. Legal issues are just more waisted thoughts. Thanks for the info though.

you do lose backpressure and torque...and yes, the cops can/will write you tickets in certain areas

straight pipes don't gain you anything but noise. You can get better performance results using a catback system

just depends on how much money you want to spend

biggest thing i stress is to match your intake velocity with your exhaust velocity. this done properly with a X pipe will be a good system. you don't "lose" any torque at all. if the intake is matched to the exhaust, nothing will be lost. it may feel like it, but it has actually just changed the torque curve to a higher RPM than stock/catback... Leaving the 4 cats in there and running duals without mufflers wouldn't be a bad thought either...

It would sound great, while attaining the 4 cats as stated above. As for the center mid pipe the x will give you a more raspy sound, vs an H will give you a more true "muscle car " sound. You could also put 2 high flow cats on with a new catback, this will also make it sound awesome. There are many avenues that you can choose. Its hard to choose sometime. lol hope this helps.

While you may think that the legal questions are wasted thoughts...keep in mind epa fines for removing cats off a vehicle (or even swapping in high flows with low enough mileage or age) can get you a 25,000 dollar fine......Go ahead and put in straight pipes...but i'd leave the cats....

Thanks for all the info. I had always planed on leaving the cats in place. I should have mentioned that. I was going to take out the y pipe where the two come together and start my duals there. I had also planned on putting a x pipe about mid ways back. I think it will sound good. Once again thnks for all your help, and info.

I've heard it on another truck, sounded great stay with 2 1/2" pipe and leave clearance if you decide to install mufflers later

I'm not saying to take the cats off. Just run straight pipes off of the cats meaning you will have no muffler. Keep the converters on. I should have said this in the first place.
