I have an 1987 F 150 with a 300 in it. If i got a glasspack for it what would you recommend? and what would you recommend for a straight pipe? Will the straight pipe make my truck to loud?
thanks alot
i would go with a flowmaster 70 series muffler instead, good low tone and will last a whole lot longer than glass pack only problem is that the flowmaster costs more. not sure about the straight pipes.
Do you still have the factory pre-heater and catalytic convertor? If you do, a straight pipe is about as loud as you can go. I had dual exhuast after the convertor without mufflers and it was pretty loud. Glasspacks will be a little quieter than a straight pipe. The 70 series flowmaster is a good performance muffler but is pretty quiet compared to the other two. The numerically lower the louder the flowmaster.
Replaced mine this summer from the cat back on my '93 F150 I-6 to a 2 1/2" pipe and a glasspack. Noise increase wasn't that noticeable, may have helped power a little. Needed a replacement anyway and it was only 150 bucks here in Iowa.
Stover007: What are you trying to acheive? Do you want it louder? Is your present muffler shot? Are you looking to economize? Just want to reduce backpressure? If your present muffler is fine and you just want it louder, I have a trick that is cheap and allows you to get just the volume you want. If the muffler is shot, go with a Flowmaster 70 for a quiet free flowing exhaust. But if you want to hear it, get at least a 50 series Flowmaster, possibly a 40, thought that may be loud. I really don't know as have not heard the different Flowmasters. Any freer flowing muffler in the stock pipe will be a great improvement. New piping of a larger diameter may not add much to be worth the extra bucks.
Go with a straight pipe then. Although glasspacks are relatively cheap, a piece of pipe is cheaper yet. Then you'll get the max amount of noise possible without removing the convertor. If you remove the convertor, you should go with a muffler otherwise you won't have enough backpressure.
did someone say the lower the number, the louder the muffler? hmm...I just put a pair of 70 series big-block 3" flows on my 83 150, 460 in place of the 40 series 3", and it's louder now than before. I'm not complaining though...it's a big block, it's supposed to be loud.
Yeah, from what I know, on Flowmasters, the lower the number, the louder they are supposed to be. I had a 70series on my truck and switched to a 40series which made it louder thena before.
Stover007: You could try what I did (bore holes in back of muffler and wrap a sheet metal shroud around the back of the muffler.) It sounds great to me and cost me nothing (see explanation https://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/exhaust/396.html and photo https://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/exhaust/403.html if interested). I have since opened some of the holes up to a larger diameter to get more volume. Or you could do what my boss did with my old '84 F150 300 I6. The muffler fell off and he did absolutely nothing. Loves it. Says it sounds like a truck should sound. So basically, a simple straight pipe in place of the muffler or drop the whole tail pipe and run a short pipe out the side in front of the wheel.
It seems the lower the number the louder the Flowmaster (70,50,40,30), but then they have the 80 which you would think should be very quiet, but I understand it is as loud as or louder than a 30! Then I think they have a 60, but is for foreign cars.
Do i need some back pressure that i woundt get if i didnt have a glasspack or a muffler? I have my cadliyic converter still on but it doesnt work at all. IF i take it off will i gain any power?
Well, a healthy convertor provides enough backpressure, and yes removing it will give a little power. Otherwise, yes, you would need some muffler for backpressure to provide the adequate backpressure to keep from suckin a valve.
hey,
Tallpaul, I've got the 4.9L...which is the same as a 300, but just wondering if it will sound the same? And that muffler is stock right? I've been wanting to make mine louder, i switched to my new truck form my old 302 w/dual glasspacks....big difference. One other thing, did you notice any difference in fuel economy (good or bad) or power? Thanks for thinking of a way to improve your truck in a cheap way, we need more people like you!
