Yes you still have to hit the switch inside.
So, if you put manual locking hubs on and keep them in locked you can still control the 4x4 inside? I.e., with the manual hubs locked the truck will still be in 2x4 until you push the locking button inside?

That is correct. That is the way I have mine right now. Of course with our blizzard here in NW Indiana, it is getting a work out...

So doesn't that make them auto-locking hubs? Seriously, how is that system different than what comes stock? My stock hubs are "frozen" and I can't get them unstuck so I am looking at replacing them with the OEM auto hubs or going with a set of manual Warns.

When the hub is locked, the gears are engaged to the axle and it always turns. When not engaged, it is free wheeling. Less wear and tear and better fuel mileage as a result when not engaged.

From inside the cab, when you engage 4X4, that will engage the transfer case to the axle and turn all.

If that makes sense.

It does and seems to fit, engineering wise, why have an "auto locking" hub vice a hub always locked in manual and then 4x4 from the cab.

Please send me any non-working OEM hubs. I'll pay for shipping! (How long ya gonna let'em sit there and collect dust? )

Hey, this is probably another stupid question, and the answer could be found by searching the forums, but my internet connection is so slow I would be senile before I got to the right thread.

Does an auto lock hub basically work like a retractable ink pen? I mean, do you send a vacuum pulse to lock the hub, and then another to release it? The PVH is only energized for 35-40 seconds, right? And that solenoid can't do anything but put vacuum on again when you switch to 2wd, can it?

That is exactly what happens and there's no stupid questions here.
We all learn every day.

The inside switch is just a convience. Women (no offense) like it and so do lazy people. I actually like even though I am neither. You could eliminate the indoor switch but then your wheels would always be in the lock position which is not devastating but it will cost you a little in gas mileage.

I've read through this whole thread and haven't found anything on what I'm experiencing. Just thought I'd toss it past you guys and see your thoughts since you seem to be pretty knowledgeable.

When my hubs are set to auto and it's warm out, I can switch it into 4x4 and hear it engage when on pavement, and it works just fine. This winter, still set to auto, I switch it 4x4 and there's no chance it's working. I flip the hubs into lock, and the 4x4 works perfectly, as does 2x4 when selected. Does this have to do with the weather?

You probably just need to service the hubs. Do a search on here for Guzzle's hub info....

are they auto or manual hubs?

Alright a little confused. I got a 2001 excursion 4x4.
do i have auto or manual hubs?
On the dash I have a **** 2 high, 4 low, 4 high.
My hubs I can rotate from free to lock. Hubs are factory.

Do I need to go out and lock the hubs or would it do it from the switch.
I alway go out manually lock them then turn **** to 4 low or 4 high depending on what im doing.

If you have the black Ford ESOF hubs, they should be labeled "Auto" and "Lock". If left in auto, and they are working properly, they should lock on their own via a vacuum pulse when you turn the dash switch to 4H or 4L

OEM hubs are auto locking. If the system is working, you can shift from 2wd to 4wd via the cab switch when the hubs are in auto.

If they're in lock, you still need to use the switch in the cab to engage the transfer case.
