I guess I was posting the last message while you were too

Yes, I changed my hubs without even jacking the X up. No, you do not need a conversion kit. That is for the axles that have NO manual control over the locking of the hub. (The completely automatic hubs).

They are $153 with free shipping from here: Mile Marker M20449ss - Auto Parts Warehouse

I was actually thinking of getting the Mile Markers but there is no place around me that carries them and I do not want to have to order them and wait for them to get here. The place I am going to has the Warn ones in stock so I am going to go with them. I am on Long Island in New York and we got dumped with 24 inches of snow last week at which time I got stuck with my truck in front of my house since the hubs are stuck. We may be getting snow again around the end of the week so I want to have the new hubs in just in case.

I have heard a lot of good things about the Warn premium hubs as well as the Mile Markers so I do not think I am making a bad decision.

Well; I picked up the Warn Premium hubs today. I looked at them and the included instructions and it seems pretty simple. I was going to try and change the hubs today but it is currently 20 degrees with 50 mph wind gusts so I figure I can wait a day or two. Thank you for the information. I will let you know how it went once I am finished changing them.

I just picked up a 2000 V10 XLT. The markings are worn off the hubs. An earlier post said that turning them clockwise locks them. In the owner's manual it shows turning them clockwise is Auto. Can someone take a look at theirs and then let me know for sure. Right now I have them clockwise and the hubs engage and disengage with the dash switch. I figure if they are both the pointed the same direction I will be alright for now.

Sorry about the hijacking, but I didn't think this was worth a new post.

Erik

Clockwise is Auto. I have the user manual online, and found a nice picture of it on page 167, but no idea how to insert a picture here. Edited: Added pic to my Album. Check it out!

I had those same ones on my '04. Great hubs. Looked real nice in that gold color they come in. Real easy swap too. When they turn to lock it's like 7/8 of a turn. I think it was under $200 for the pair of em. As far as the easy swap it was manual hub for manual hub. I don't know about converting auto hubs but as far as I know you just need to cap of the vacuum lines and the swap is basically the same

08FX4, thanks for the reply. but, i have had a set of the milemarker 449SS, stainless steel manual hubs, on my X for several years now. i love em and they were in fact a super easy swap. i also never capped my vacuum lines either. you do realize that this thread was started in the very end of 2005. almost exactly 5 years ago...

Amazing and it hasn't progressed much in 5 years. I just read the whole thing. Reading the gas VS diesel thread would be torture.

I figure I might as well pile on an existing thread instead of starting another one - lol.

I removed, cleaned, and reassembled both of my stock hubs last night - but they still aren't working quite right. I can manually set them to unlocked, but the inner cam gear is "clicking" when you rotate the tire, which tells me they are disengaged, but just barely.

If I change them from the AUTO setting to locked - they will lock, but they do not want to go back to unlocked if I turn the dial back to AUTO. I had to manually remove, disassemble, and unlock to get them unlocked.

I guess on the up side - I can see what kind of mpg improvements I get after them being locked in ever since bought the truck a few months back.

I'd really rather not swap to aftermarket hubs, I just want to make these OEM parts work like they should. Any advice on the issue of them not fully disengaging would be appreciated.

DRM, when you go to unlock the hubs, are you able to turn the dial to unlock, and just the inner gears not disengaging?

I assume you mean "auto" by "unlock", since the vaccum 4wd system is in place?

Anyway, the dial turns completely to where it should, however the hub will not fully unlock as it should. Keep in mind - this is with the tire up in the air, so I can spin the tire freely as I wish, and check if the axle shaft is turning as well.

You have to remember that when you auto lock from within the cab it takes atleast one tire revolution to lock in. I would assume that this will be true for the unlock also and trying it while up in the air would not be the same. Try it while driving. Lock in and then unlock, giving it a few revolutions to unlock, then reach behind the tire and see if you can rotate the stub shaft to see if it unlocked properly.

DRM, just had the same problem a few months ago. After disassembly, relube and new Orings, still seemed they were staying slightly engaged enough to hear some grinding. With wheels off the ground, you could rotate the hub back and forth several times quickly and sometimes get it to quit rotating, but the real fix was afterwards, I took it out to a parking lot, engaged 4X4 and turned a few sharp turns. She bucked and jumped like it should while engaged on pavement. Then I put back in 2WD and drove forward a few feet and then did the turns again. She was no longer engaged and no clicking anymore. I think after the disassembly, it needs to get locked in and used some then unlocked to reverse with the vacuum.

I haven't had any problems since and have used 4X4 several times since and she dis-engages correctly now every time and no more clicking or catching when I turn in a parking lot.

It is nice to be free wheeling again!

No one I talked to even at the dealership had a clue to the issue.
