I have a set of brand new Mile Marker hubs that I bought for my 2002 Exucrsion. Now that it is gone they need to find a new home! Anyone interested let me know and we can work out a good deal for both of us.

I apologize if this question was previously answered somewhere in this thread but I have a problem that I need to address ASAP as I need to use my truck ASAP.

I have a 2002 F250 Super Duty Gas V8.

My sister had been apparently messing around with the hubs that are manual (I would assume) because the auto switch in the cab did not engage 4wd if you select it. For years the truck's 4wd would not work if the switch was turned but it ran fine in 2H.

What she did was turn the hubs into LOCK (with excessive force she added) and now the truck is stuck in 4wd. She says we may need to replace the switch (if that is possible) or buy brand new hubs because she was driving it with the hubs in 4wd and found out she was "binding" them up more and more each time.

My question is if I were to attempt to force the hubs back into FREE somehow and leave the cabin switch be, could the truck go back to normal again but without a functioning 4WD for now? All I need is the truck and do not care for the 4wd at the moment.

Thank you in advance!

It sounds like the switch and the hub activation were both bad. (The switch was stuck in 4wd but wasn't effective until the dials were turned). I would turn the dials counter clockwise with enough force but not enough to break the dials or/and take the hubs off (easy), drill a small hole in the recessed part of the dials, and soak them in a bowl of ATF overnight and them work them free in the morning with pliers. You can replace the o-ring in the dials also if you are so inclined. Take the truck to a gravel road or grass etc to verify the 4wd is/isn't working.

It sounds like the switch and the hub activation were both bad. (The switch or T-case was stuck in 4wd but wasn't effective until the dials were turned). I would turn the dials counter clockwise with enough force but not enough to break the dials or/and take the hubs off (easy), drill a small hole in the recessed part of the dials, and soak them in a bowl of ATF overnight and them work them free in the morning with pliers. If she didn't use pliers it wasn't excessive force. If you can't fix it, take the front shaft off until you can.

So you're saying I should remove the hubs from the wheels (remove snap ring, pull hub out) and drill a hole where exactly? And she used some kind of large pliers to turn the dials into LOCK (as I looked today there are no LOCK or FREE labels on my hub dials, so I am just trying to force them counter-clockwise). And what exactly is the front shaft? I apologize again as I am new to this stuff. At the moment I would just like the truck to disengage the 4wd even if that means having to sacrifice 4wd temporarily.
Thanks

Take off the front drive shaft if you have to. Yes pop the hubs off but don't drive it like that and drill a tiny hole in the plastic dial but where it is recessed so the ATF can get in there.............soak

Is it difficult to remove the front drive shaft? I am not familiar with the process.

Also, I have been trying to turn the hub dials with a number of different pliers around my garage and they only budged an inch max and I broke some of the plastic from forcing it too hard. Therefore, there are already small holes in the dials from the plastic breaks so do I still need to drill holes in the hub dials?

And after soaking them in tranmission fluid, I insert them back into the wheels and they should turn back counter-clockwise and the truck will be back in 2wd?

If I just removed the front drive shaft and left the hubs alone would that also work to put the truck back into 2wd?

Thanks

Locking Hub Wear?

I have a question regarding using locking hubs for everyday use. Is it safe to leave hubs engaged during normal driving conditions? I see guys do it, but I'm afraid that it would cause driveline stress. Im not worried about MPG or normal wear/tear from the assembly rotating, Im talking about binding of the axles/gears do to both tires rotating at different speeds. To me, this seems unavoidable??

First off, welcome to FTE! The best Ford Truck website there is!!!!

Yes, it is ok to leave the hubs in the locked position. They will spin and cause a small decrease in MPG's, this is how the Expedition and Dodge trucks are set up, no free spin option. They are only engaging with the front diff when you select 4hi/lo.

There is no binding of anything, the spider gears are still doing their job of compensating for that.

ALSO i know this sounds silly but i had an issue of the vehicle not disengaging from 4x4 low., was getting frustrated and was thinking stuff was froze up as i have read here....then i called my mechanic and advised him of my problem...he says...Turn the hubs to auto...get in the rig, put it in Neutral, put your foot on the brake, wait 5 seconds, then turn the "On the Fly" switch to 4x4 low and then back to 2wd.......Bam problem solved....my mechanic said its an odd thing ford did with the 4x4 system to prevent inadvertant damage although he stated it suceeded in counfusing alot of people hahaha

You don't even have to turn the hubs or wait 5 seconds.
