Fuel Gauge Sending Unit?

The gas gauge on my 78 F100 doesn't worked. Checked the fuses and all look fine. I've tried finding a sending unit for the tank, but have had no luck on finding one without having to buy the whole tank.

Is there a different name for this part or can it even be purchased separate from the tank? Maybe there's something I'm overlooking and it isn't that unit at all.

Anyone help out with this?

BTW, I think I've got the smoking problem taken care of. I put a regular breather cap on it that doesn't have an opening in the top, but still has a filter and breathes through the bottom, along with a new PCV valve. It doesn't smoke near as bad or blow oil, but there are times when I'm going up a hill under load that it will stall out in 2nd gear. That's another issue though.

Any help is appreciated.

I know you can buy just the sending units. Try LMC Truck, i know there website dosnt cover half the stuff thats in there catalogs. Should be around $80.

As for your stalling, might even be the pickup tube thats on the sending unit.

2 Problems might be 1 fix!

I scanned the two gas tanks pages out of my LMC Truck mag. PM me with you email addy and ill send em right over.

Does it move at all?

9 times out of 10, the fuel guage problems are bad wiring and poor connections, not the sending unit. Crawl under the pickup and inspect the wiring to the tank, checking for cracks or rubbing. If it looks questionable, replace it. Be sure to solder the splices and use heat shrink tubing - crimp connectors will give you problems down the road. Also check that the connection at the tank is clean and tight and coated with dielectric grease. Also check that the ground to frame is clean and tight - I like to sand the rust off with sand paper and coat ground point with dielectric grease.

You may want to pull your current sending unit and shake its float. If you hear fluid in it, it may be taking on fuel and sinking. This is an easy fix, I'll bet your local parts peddler has one or can get you one in a couple of days. O'Reilly here in Texas got me one from the warehouse, under $10. My '78 F-150 did the same thing a couple of months ago, hopefully yours is too.

Good luck, Bob

also if yyou take it out you can check it with an ohm meter. just put the leads on it and move the float up and down and watch the meter. it should give you different readings as it moves. Erv

Would this explain intermittantly bad readings? One of my senders will sometimes be accurate and sometimes show empty regardless of the actual fuel level.
