There are fixes for dodge trannys, its called a rebuilt tranny, heavy duty clutch packs, shift kit, replace the stupid aluminum parts with steel (cant remember what was aluminum) etc. Why get a factory replacement if they are so bad. The Chevs have alot worse.

It was purely for marine ironmans benifit. He seems to have missed all the fun. Accused me of making up numbers.
TC=torque converter. VB=valve body. bts=best tranny shop

150Ford, ignore Logical Heretic. He doesn't own a PSD and doesn't know what he's talking about.

I own both a 2004 PSD and 1996 Cummins. Both are nice engines. My dodge is barely holding onto the engine. The Ford is a marvelous truck and transmission, paired on a peer-of-equals level with a great PSD.

My Cummins is loud and dieselly smelling. It is geared lower, and is slower. It's been a great truck. The steering had to be re-done, and the transmission clunks a lot. The interior noise doesn't permit conversations at times.

My PSD is smooth, and I cannot hear it from the interior. My mileage is better. It is faster and MUCH quicker accelerating. My gas tank is 33% larger (44 gallon compared to 36 gallon). My brakes are MUCH better. My transmission is rock solid.

150ford: a P.S. - I found that the best fix for my Dodge transmission clunking was to buy a Ford. Last December, my power steering went out, and it was pulling bad to the left. My transmission clunked all the time. I knew I had a whopper repair-bill looming. I knew I'd have to rent a vehicle while it was repaired. All my neighbors aren't having to go through this hassle at 100K miles. Cars are better than that these days, except for my Dodge, which was babied and never did any huge amount of work, save hauling some stone a few times.

I stopped in to see what Ford had, and if the poofter-looking 150's from 1996 had been improved or not (my cigar doesn't go with an alternate-lifestyle looking truck). Much to my surprise, the super-duties were much improved, better looking, and sporting a new PSD. After checking it out online, I went back and bought one, and waited to repair the Dodge later.

I've had them both for about 8 months now. There is no comparison, and it's not even a fair or close contest ... the Ford PSD is a superior machine, and much better suited for pickup duty than the inline Cummins approach.

Now if I was hauling rocks around a quarry in a buggy-mobile, or something like that, the Cummins would be great. But I use my truck for multiple purposes, including regular street driving, highway, errands, hauling, towing, family vacations, etc. The Ford and V-8 PSD is much better suited for that task.

My cousin had an 03 psd 250. Transmission went out. He was pulling 5th wheel camper. Drove into Ford dealership in town along the way. Was told warranty void because of towing too heavy. I am not sure of the weight of the camper, but the Chevy he traded the Ford in on hasent had any trouble out of the Allison. It embarrased me because I always used to rag him about Chevys. That was his first, and last Ford. I talked him into buying that Ford and he is still mad at me. He says the duramax has more felt power than the 6.0. I would say the Cummins does, but not the d-max.

A school-mate of mine drove his Ford explorer to Florida, and towed back a sailing boat. The boat & trailer were way over his towing limit. He said things felt funny going up hills, but kept on going. Finally his explorer started smelling funny and he pulled over, I think in South Carolina.

His transmission was shot, and there were wires protruding out of his tire's sidewalls. He replaced the transmission and tires, and drove the rest of the way at the minimum speed. When he told me this story, all I could do was laugh and ask him was he aware that what he was towing probably required at least a 350 or better truck.

So, when these posters plant stories about their yahoo family members who tow things heavier than their rating, you have to scratch your head and wonder. Remember ... ONE-HALF of all drivers have an I.Q of less than 100. Every other car you pass on the highway is being driven by a knuckle-head.

Is anyone denied a driver's license? Not that I'm aware of. Yes, folks, idiots abound on the road, and in my opinion are responsible for at least 80% of traffic accidents.

Some don't get in accidents, but simply do things like buy a truck rated for towing 12,000 lbs, perhaps, and then slap on a mega-gooseneck trailer loaded up with who knows what, and weighing in at 14,000 or more. These people get what they deserve.

I have a 94 7.3. I can email you a picture of me in it if you like. Its not pretty but it gets from a to b. Good tow rig.

I dont know where you get that I dont know what Im talking about. I have researched all of this heavily. Perhaps that is why you didnt know about the early 6.0s woes. It seems to me that you are the one who does not know what he is talking about.

If you have a 1994 7.3, then it's no wonder you're bashing the Ford PSD. Is your engine the lower 175HP or the 250HP? Either way you have about 1/2 to 2/3 of the 6.0L horsepower.

I own a 6.0 PSD and a pre-600 cummins. Listen ... my dodge is no match for my ford in all areas. To get something close to what I have in my Ford, I'd have to literally run out and buy a new 2004 1/2 dodge w/ 600, and then what am I going to do? Get the 4-speed auto with the substituted parts they put in to "beef" it up for the Cummins? Or should I get the pain-in-the-rear 6-speed manual with the ****-on-a-boarhog 1st gear that I need about like I need a hole in the head, and which is rated for 550 ft-lbs of input?

Do me a favor. Go to your local Ford Dealer and tell them you're looking around and you want to test drive a truck, and then pick a PSD and go for a spin. Drive at least 20 minutes, including a highway stretch and try some acceleration. Then, after having seen the heavens open and gleams of light have descended upon you, return to the FTE forum and give us your actual real assessement, from driving experience (albeit short and sweet) of the 6.0 PSD.

I guarantee that you have not seen anything like what the 6.0 PSD does .... and be sure you're driving the TS trany. (Manuals are delivered on order only usually, so they should have mostly TS's in stock).

... over and out

I have driven them all. I have friends that own dmaxs and 6.0s. I had to go down to dodge to drive a 600 though. Too new.

My 7.3 has 190hp. For work reasons I have driven most ratings of the PSD.

NV5600 spec input of 550 ft-lbs:
http://dodgeram.org/tech/transmission/nv5600_spec.html

Dodge has been in violation of the NV5600 specs since 2003 when it had an engine putting out 555 ft-lbs of torque.

New Venture (at http://www.newventuregear.com/transmissions.html) has removed their web-page w/ the 550 ft-lbs spec. There are links to this page (now dysfunctional) all over the web on BB's.

There is another nv5600 spec. I have located it in the past. It is for 650. I speculated the difference was in the clutch.

Whats the zf rated for? Last I heard it was less than 560 lb ft.

Alright found the numbers. http://www.zf-group.com/pdf/lightTru...0datasheet.pdf Its rated to 520lb ft. So its 40 lb ft over its rating. Good thing most of the SD are sold with autos.

Isn't the reason most Fords and Dodges come with autos because all 6 speeds junk? Seems the ford ones are just as bad for self destructing as the dodge 6 speeds. I could be way off but seems to me I read that somewhere, I'll try to find it.
