I've read that some of the newer trucks (20-22?) came default at 120% target SOC.
My 2020 was one of those. Lifted the hood to add some washer fluid and was met with strong acid smell. That's when I heard the batteries boiling. Batteries were 3 years old at that point. After hearing about all the failures, I started read all the AGM posts. Bought a couple X2 Power AGMs and hooked up ForScan to make the changes. That's when I noticed the charge rate at 120%! No wonder the batteries were boiling. I changed it to 90% after finding little information about the correct setting.
When looking at all the AGM specs, the warranty was actually the last of my concerns. Sure it is nice to be able to exchange at a store that is located just about everywhere, but I'd rather buy a better battery that is less likely to put me in that situation at an inconvenient time.
Probably why the batteries off-gas so bad they have to be wiped after every drive and corrode the hold downs so bad they peel paint and rust.
That’s one of the reasons I am upgrading. I’m starting to get rust spots on the hold downs from the out gassing and they just aren’t holding the voltage levels like they should.
lets Down grade the charge so less gas is produced
Makes sense except for the fact that prior to 2020, these trucks came default set to a target SOC at 80%....and still had issues with off gassing and corrosion.
Bob,
I have the same truck, only with single battery, why do you think it's time to replace the battery? Mileage? Hours?
Thanks,
Chan
The truck is my daily driver and is 3 years old 12k. The reason I am replacing them is that they are sulfating to the point that the hold down brackets are showing rust spots and it isn’t holding voltage like it used to. It also is constantly going into sleep mode.
No trouble starting yet but I hunt and don’t want to be stuck anywhere so I am being proactive. I sure wish these trucks had a voltmeter from the factory. Something I will remedy in the near future.

Thanks for the quick response. Mine is not a daily but I tow a decent amount (avg ≈1k+ mi/month) and also don't want to get stranded.
Bought it used earlier this yr with 21k and it's got 36k currently. I did notice my battery is sulfating as well.
If these things are programmed to charge at 120% with factory battery and considering comments the AGM should be 80-90%, what % do you intend to set yours?

Undecided, I am not sure what it will default to when I change the profile to AGM. I damn sure won’t leave it at 120% if that is what it defaults to. I just re-upped my Forescan membership so I can take care of the programming.
I'm guessing that you'll be doing a little cleaning maintenance besides the battery replacement? A solution of distilled water and baking soda on the holddowns and battery ends to remove all corrosion and residual acid deposits. A quick sanding & repaint the holddowns with some black rustolem. Give the battery/ cable ends a coating of some NOCO NCP2 battery corrosion preventive.

For sure. I plan on keeping the truck a long time.
Well I set my truck up for AGM battery 700 CCA and also changed charge to 90%. Now have to order the batteries. NO Walmart stores in my area stock the Group 65 AGMs.
