Today's the day! I am going to the DMV and transferring the plates from the 86 to Ol' Red this morning...
Are there still issues that need to be addressed? Yes but I will be the point that I can drive her a little. I'm still having carb issues but she's running to the point that's it's driveable. She still lean pops if I get on it too hard sometimes indicating the need for more adjustments but I'll bring her to a friend who will give me a little help.
After I get back from the DMV I will be getting a couple of people to help me put the bed back on and get the lights working. I still need to finish up the wiring for the trailer lighting and the aux lights under the bumper. I still have a vacuum leak in the HVAC control area that I'm not able to figure out so I have that line capped under the hood. I've been struggling to figure out how the heater box comes out so I can check the lines and door valves but I'm starting to think it might be the controls themselves. The wipers are still struggling but are working enough for now.
I'll get some pictures a little later today once she's moving around. I also did find some more rot yesterday that I didn't see before. The passenger side rocker channel under the aluminum door sill cover is gone Oh well I guess that's just something else for phase 2...
The pop sounds like either a timing issue or vacuum leak. How does it run when you don't give it any gas? There are those who say not to do this but don't listen to them. Get a can of starting fluid with the straw still attached and spray lightly over every joint you see with the air cleaner on it. Preferably one with the snorkel out front. It will serve as an isolater. If it speeds up you have found your problem. As for timing I would start with checking to see how much the crank pulley moves in either direction before the rotor button moves. There may too much play in the timing chain. The great thing about Ford is the distributor is up front and you don't need to to check it. I have no idea what carb is on this but has it ever been rebuilt?
Yeah DMV is a B!#ct but it wasn't too bad today, It only took an hour.
The popping is caused by a lean situation. We've almost got it set. I did use carb cleaner on all the vacuum lines and initially did find a couple of leaks and replaced the lines but that was before and we're still working through it....
It is the rail or wall at the front & rear of the valley lifter the flat part of the intake sits on.
Gasket kits give a rubber or cork gaskets to seal this.
Throw them gaskets away, clean the rails and intake really good and run a thick bead of RTV and let it skim over a bit before you install the intake.
The RTV should squish out a little and seal and never leak.

It's called that because people think it looks like the wall in China. Anywho like you I figured it was carb related. I knew it wasn't the timing or the valves being out of adjustment. The chain was brand new and the rockers had locks. With Holley carbs this can be expensive and annoying because with the older ones, every time it backfires you have to replace the power valve. After a couple of rebuilds and several different carbs, something told me to check the back of the intake. I took it apart and fixed it only later for it to start again. That's when I changed the way I did it. Blue silicone first, rubber end caps then silicone on top. Wait twenty minutes and install intake, snug it down wait six hours before torquing it down, problem solved😒.
@ravenwolf6969 Ok I'm thinking it a VGG thing (a Derekisim) Just so I'm on the same page and know exactly what you mean, I haven't had enough coffee yet.... Below is a random picture but I've circled the area I think you are talking about. I call the part that would be used here the rear intake manifold gasket...

Yes this would be the culprit. They're generally rubber and heat is death to rubber. The cork gaskets aren't much better, that's why I use blue silicone. Set it and forget it😅.
I hate getting old... Everything has to be put on hold right now as I ended up with a pinched nerve in my neck. IDK how it happened but I know it happened when I was mowing a lawn Thursday...

Push mower or riding tractor?
After riding the tractor for a few hours, takes a little over 3 to cut my grass, I have everything it takes to get off the thing and walk, and it has a spring ride new seat.
Yep getting old is not fun but have not found away to stop it yet either

LOL, takes me an hour riding my 54" mower, and I have a hard time walking afterward...so it's not just me. LOL I feel better now
I should have said "that is with a 60" deck" dont even want to think how long a 54" deck would take
I dont have a lot to cut around so a zero turn would not help.
It has fuel injection, water cooled 2 cly 22 hp, a Hydro lift 3 point hitch for the plows for the garden, Hydro 4 way plow for the front if we get snow, Hydro lift deck, power steering, speed control, tilt wheel, adjustable seat, dif.lock, head & tail lights for night cutting and even a drink holder.
She is fully loaded for a garden tractor other than a rear PTO.
