Anyone else have a much louder engine when running Hydra tunes?
I've read a few posts from people describing a noisier engine when running tunes. In stock mode truck sounds normal, when I click up to any tune it is almost obnoxious, especially in lower RPM range. Worse if the engine is cold. I don't run tunes till engine is warmed up, though if ambient temps are below like 20 it still seems noiser.
I'm trying to understand if this is just normal or if I have some items to address.
Sounds mostly like valves/injectors. I have new AD injectors, did the hutch mod awhile ago, run T6 5w-40. Truck runs good. Hydra thinks I have e99 AB injectors still, not sure if this matters.
Yup. I've run a bunch of different custom tunes and the PHP tunes that are included with the hydra were by far the loudest on my truck. I have stock e99 injectors with 259k miles on them, so that doesn't help with noise. Jelibuilt tunes run the quietest on my truck, still a little louder than stock, but barely noticeable.

I have read about Jelibuilt tunes before, if I were to get just one (1) tune from them, and I want good HP, but maximum mpg with a light foot, which tune would be preferable?
I do not drive hard, and just the occasional pull up a mtn pass towing a 9k toy hauler.

Here's a video. Starts out in stock mode and I toggle in and out of I think a 25hp tune. Climbing a pretty steep hill, usually seems louder in lower RPMs under heavy load.

So I have the Daily Driver, Tow Performance, and Hot Street from Jelibuilt.
Power is similar between the daily driver and tow performance tune until you really get on the pedal and then the daily driver does have a bit more kick. Main difference between them is the shift points. The tow performance tune holds each gear longer (ya know, for towing purposes) than the daily or hot tune. Hot Street has fun power, but it runs hotter and I wouldn't want to tow a lot of weight with it.
If you're towing 9k up a mountain, I'd look into either strenuous tow or maybe tow performance. I'd also recommend emailing or calling Jelibuilt and see what they have to say.

My XXL hands can't reach the nut on the Firewall side to undo the connector.
and my 80 y/o eyes can't focus closer than 30 inches, even with my Reading Glasses.
we installed "Whisper Mode at 01"
"high idle 1000 rpm at 02"
"Fuel Sipper at 04"
just 3 tunes to prove it all works.
I drove home on Fuel Sipper, and was very impressed.
The engine was quieter, the throttle response and Transmission shifting felt like I was driving my '01 Suburban it was so smooth and shifted "so perfect" for my "light footed" style of driving.
There is a noticeable difference in idle noise between PHP, Gear Head and OEM tuning on my truck. It doesn't bother me much though as the benefits of having a tune that runs well far outweigh the elevated noise level. Even though my truck is 23 years old and tuned with a MBRP muffler, it is MONUMENTALLY more quiet than some of the brodozer diesel trucks running around.
If you have FORScan or FORScan Lite, you could monitor the IPR DC, ICP, FIPW, etc and review the log later or you could chart it by following the instructions below. That will tell you exactly why the engine sounds different in various tunes.
