So wondering if it possible to change out standard rear diff for Limited slip on 2003 250.. or do you have to replace the whole rear axle with LS.. ?? I know i can replace with a locker, but lockers are not good in snow, ice and a limited slip is.. locker is probably better in sand, mud etc
if so any idea on cost?? where to do this? Person/ shop etc.. we located in FL till April then Central NC area..
Yes you most certainly can. Any reputable offroad/drive train shop should be able to handle it for you. When you get back to NC look up east coast gear supply. They can do it for sure.
^^^This. Definitely this. It transformed the way my truck drove in slippery conditions completely.
Also, if you believe what Gale Banks has to say about square-back high-volume diff covers, ditch that Mag-Hytec and go with the finned aluminum cover from an '08 and up axle (assuming you have a Sterling).
they on hwy 401 north of Rolesville?? anyone you know there to recommend? thanks
Yep that's it. I've never personally dealt with them but there highly reccomended in the area for 4x4 drive train work. I've been 4 wheeling for 15 years and you still see there name highly reccomended.
Doesn't matter Open, locker, LS, or truetrack carriers as long as it is of like size (8.8, 9, 9.5 ect.) the will all fit in the rear diff housing. I changed the 8.8 open carrier w/3.23's in my crown vic to a 3.55 LS no issues other than the speedo calibration. Rember if the carrier is used (or any internal part) it must be re-installed exactly as it was in the doner vehicle or it WILL start making noise, especially the ring and pinion. wear patterns must match in order to have any chance of a quiet rear end. For this reason most diy'ers swap the complete differential not just gears.
As a consideration, I swapped my open diff carrier to a factory LSD. I used my original ring gear and, to my benefit, the shims were exactly the same the two axles. This allowed me to upgrade to the LSD without any significant work. It has been rolling around for about 40-50k without any problems. Depending on your goal and budget, there are multiple options.
I also second the 08+ diff cover. It looks good and is functional.
