Work smarter, not harder is something I have tried to stick with. Although it is becoming more important as I get older. Just today I was helping bust up some concrete and installing a garage door. Having the proper tools and techniques instead of making other tools work and just going at it makes all the difference.

I hate not having the proper tools! It makes things so much harder.

Each time I have done the steering gear or helped with it, the pullers made the job a lot easier. I have a sledge hammer and a 3 lbs hand hammer, but those are reserved for proper uses.
I quite enjoyed using the puller aswell. And considering I only spent 20 bucks on it and I have a tool I can use for hopefully as long as I'll ever need it, I don't see any reason not to.

Proper uses like beating on other things? That's what hammers are for isn't it?

Of course. Here is the puller I bought from advanced Auto, it had a 1 and 5/16 in opening when I first opened the box. I thought it was 1 and 3/8 of an inch but I was wrong. Again, purchased from advance Auto, bought it right off the shelf and in store it was $16.99 I believe. The price may have changed since then according to this app.

After grinding away a bit, I ended up at a 1 and 9/16 inch opening at the top. I made sure to remove an even amount from either side. This was enough to where you just barely missed the splines of the steering gear sector shaft but are close enough to it that you still have plenty of meat grabbing the pitman arm.

Of course I grinded away at the opening a bit to fit past the sector shaft, and while I didn't do this, I recommend you to maybe remove a little bit of material right where my thumb is placed. I would try it first before that because I was able to do it without touching it but, if some material was removed from that specific location on both sides it would help the puller fit over the pitman arm itself a little better. I had clearance issues but, I also have a aftermarket pitman arm that may be wider than factory. I am unsure but, I was able to wiggle the custom tool on far enough to pull off the pitman arm anyway.

I hope this helps! Let me know if there's any other information you need.
